After 10 years I have worn out two washing machines. Both ended up leaking water onto the floor. Different brands and "top of the line". My complaint to the salesman was met with the response that the machines are now all wearing out in 5-7 years and that the basic no frills machines only last a year or two.
A new wrinkle has appeared on the scene this time. The installers had a little packet of "Affresh". They claim that he detergent "eats" the seals in the washer and that's one of the reasons the machines don't live very long. By running a clean cycle with an affresh tablet and an old rag once a month the seals are supposed to get a protective coating to extend the life. I'm going to try it.
This also got me to thinking that he detergent probably isn't the best stuff to use to pre-soak my stained towels. I've noticed that they seem to lose the stitching and get frayed sooner than expected. I'm not sure what I'll use to pre soak now because non he has fats that can gum up the innards of these newfangled machines.
Life certainly throws a few curve balls at this old lady. At least my newfangled electric car seems to be working better than ever.

I use an organic powder. Never had a problem. Never needed affresh.
HE is simply a low sudsing detergent. Most of the new machines detect suds, so they run longer if they do make suds. I use a powder that takes 1 TB per load. The machine does most of the work and the spot treatment does the rest. Some oxi goes in if needed.

You can also take a wet face cloth and run it around the inside of the gasket to get the gunk out. Once/month is probably a good time frame. I usually wait until I get streaks on sheets. Lazy.
I've used my washers for years without any issues other than that build up of gunk and the smell if I close the door when it's not in use.
I've used my machines for over 10 years each so I think you're being handed a line of hooey. Consider the amount of laundry I do in a week with 9 beds, plus all the blankets, quilts, mattress pads, and my own laundry.

Steaks on sheets? Yikes. My machine is from the people who brought you the exploding phone... never had that. 7 years, never wiped it down once.

Hmmm. Dinner in bed?
Yes, the gasket gets gunky and that causes streaks. So, no exploding washers but some cleaning of the gasket required regularly.

This one I have now is gray. It's not the gasket that leaves the streaks, it's the gunk that builds up inside the folds and creases where the small drain hole is.

Well, they may build phones that burst into flames, but their washer doesn't have a gunk problem.

Doesn't their washer also go berserk?

I run my machines empty on a 90c wash (no powder) fairly regularly, this is supposed to stop the build up of gunk.

It's probably afraid of you. ;-)

No, it's afraid of Specific. He's the "wired" one. Remember what he did to all the TVs?

I think I am in my 3rd year with my machine made by the exploding phones. Previous machine lasted about 17 years. Have not had any problems with this one - no leaking and no streaks. It is a top loader (as was the first) but this one has no agitator. I always use the second rinse feature and liquid detergent.

That is what we have . Didn't you get the recall/repair notice? Ours started rusting under the dispenser after a few years . DH took it apart and did some repair with something to prevent it from continuing. The company does not guarantee rusting damage. I was ticked they used such cheap materials!

The only repair notice I got was a decal to put over the "setting" selector to not use "normal" for bedding. It gets harder use during the summer of course, but I have had no problems at all so far.

Yes when you get the Decal, you are then suppose to place it on the washer and contact them for repair man to come out and do the fix. You just missed a step.
