Got the following email from an unhappy guest, would you reply and apologize, offer comments, or just ignore as an unhappy camper? He is correct, there is not a light blocking liner, but curtains are mostly black in color and do have a liner, I'm more likely to find that a guest has used and forgotten a nightlight in the room, and no don't usually heat empty rooms.
Email content follows:
I trying to warn other of how bad a place your is, but you have no blog on your website. I will never stay in a place without a blog! But I sure there are on other hotel sites in the area.that I going to post this on their blog.

I arrived just before midnight last Friday night. She charged me $100 but I was super tired after my 7 hour car ride.. When I went to my room she said no one will be on duty and let her know about my following night stay? My room was cold and took till 1AM to get into bed warmly. Tried to sleep but the light came though the curtains like the sun was up. Check the curtain and they had no light proofing backing :-O So I took my bed sheet off the bed but there is no curtain rod due to weird construct, somehow it was built into the wall. Did have nails or a hammer to make it work. Hour after hour I could not sleep till finally use a T-shirt over my eyes. But that didn't last long. Then the sun came thought the other window with no backing on it. I got like 2.5 hours of sleep for $100. You and your hotel should be ashamed at what you put me through with no help after hours. My next night was excellent and they wanted a letter to put on their wall about you!

I think a "sorry you had a bad night's sleep, we'll take your suggestions and try and make the next guests' experience better" email would salve the wounds. Some people just want to be heard.
That said, if I read that review I'd think more poorly of the reviewer than the reviewee.

Wow. They were expecting quite a lot. I will imagine your rooms are not below 50 degrees in the winter and probably heat up to 65 in about an hour. That might be a tad too long. Did you know this person was coming? If not, nothing to do. If yes, perhaps a preheat if you have an idea of arrival time.
Do you have info for how the guest can contact you? That's what they should be told, not that no one is around.
Light blocking - if there's a gap in the drapes that should be addressed. We have blinds that no one can operate. They are always open, not closed. The drapes are not light blocking, which is a bit exciting at 4am in July. ;-) Guests are supposed to use blinds and drapes in conjunction.
As for this guy? A simple reply that you understand he did not enjoy his stay. Thank him for taking time to write his list.
I don't understand why he stayed at all as you don't have a blog he could complain on!
Actually, given he has said the other place wants to hang your comments on the wall, I'd be very brief in response. As you don't know what he's planning to do with his response from you.

My guess is the guy was so wired after his drive he wasn't sleeping anywhere, no matter how dark the room.
If you've never heard any of these complaints before, I'd just have a look around to see if there is an issue anywhere.
You can't stop him, but you might (or, why drive yourself nuts) check other local motel reviews to see if you get mentioned.

I am with P Swan on this one.
BTW - I stayed in a B & B in SC, wanted to help the industry rather than a motel. The room got very warm during the day with the door closed and very chilly at night. The only suggestion I made when I left, was to put a grab bar on the wall by the shower. Climbing out of the tub was scary - the tub felt slick even with the skid tape on the bottom of it.

I've been in that shape myself, for whatever reason on edge and didn't rest well, but excepted that it was me and not the room

Guest was an unexpected walk in at 11PM. We heat the odd numbered rooms so that the building isn't cold, often preheat or cool rooms if a guest is expected. Thermostat knob is numbered from 1 (hot) to 10 (cold) I suspect some folks don't read the unit or the guest book and tend to think higher number is hotter.
This weekend we were out of town, Maxine's dad's health and her brother had managed to tumble from a second floor balcony, but daughter lives next door to us and gives guests her number.

He seems to be saying that the 60 watt bulb on the porch made the room too bright at 11PM, daughter said he used wash clothes to cover, alarm clock, TV receiver and the time on the microwave. Same curtains and heater in my room, while not totally black it is dark, but then I shut my eyes when I sleep.

I think his sister stayed here!!! There is one small green light (about the size of the tip of my pinky) on the ac/heater regardless if it is on or off. (there to indicate there is power to the unit) She complained about that light her entire stay. I think he was just too uptight to unwind.

A small apology and that you would look into the issues he presented in hopes to appease him.

I would email back that you are sorry he did not enjoy his stay ... and you will look into the issues he stated. You might give a little info about being called away on emergency and there was a contact number provided but arriving so late he might have missed that. Or not
I myself need complete darkness to sleep so can relate but I never go off on someone about it.
When you can, I would suggest going in the room at night to duplicate the conditions. Lie on the bed. See if the light is coming in. I am one of those that will cover a clock radio or will even put it in a drawer. Even the light on a smoke detector bugs me. But I consider myself abnormal so I deal with it.
Also ... HEAT! I have stayed in many places where the heat has fluctuated wildly in the night in the room I'm in. I am a cool sleeper, but will wake when it gets cold. It's important for you to know if this is happening.
ps I had to use the captcha logging in to forum just now

Seashanty good or bad I know the light level exactly as our bedroom was a former motel room facing the same porch, same curtains and same heater/ac unit. I'll admit that rooms are not totally black, I'd call it charcoal, I can see enough to find my way to the bath without tripping over something after my eyes are used to the darkness, but not like a light shining through a crack into my eyes. I was surprised that he didn't mention the smoke detector as they do twinkle. Perhaps the rooms could be darker, but if I needed total blackout I think I'd look or ask, other have not commented to it being a problem.
Rooms have individual heat/ac units, would melt me in short order, although I did have one guest who thought his heater didn't work as he felt he needed to set it on #10 even though the arrow said cooler in that direction.

Sounds like the person is off the wall! No blog on a website ? Sorry why would I open myself up to idiots like you.
agree a simple follow up with sorry for your issues we will look into your concerns

I have to cover all those things, too. A 60w bulb would be very bright if the light couldn't be blocked. I had to get black out drapes because the motel 3 doors up the street has some sort of sodium light in their parking lot that shines directly at my window.
Given all the exterior lights in my neighborhood, I can walk thru my entire building at midnight without turning on a light. I need those black out drapes to sleep.
However, Gomez does not have good night vision so we do plug in a nightlight in the bathroom when we travel.

I would have taped something over that light if it was more than one night. I might start traveling with electrical tape!
I'm thinking of doing that on our TV's. I can see that power on light in one of our rooms from the end of my driveway. They must all be like that, just that none of the other TV's face that direction.
Well, it seems I'm light sensitive with all my complaints!

ps I have tried using sleep masks and can't stand them on my face. But I don't go on a rant about this as needing dark to sleep is my issue I deal with ... but the no BLOG complaint is odd.

A small apology and that you would look into the issues he presented in hopes to appease him.
.

Reminds me of a former car, got tired of looking at the warning light and put electrical tape on the dash

I don't understand why he stayed at all as you don't have a blog he could complain on!
Actually, given he has said the other place wants to hang your comments on the wall, I'd be very brief in response. As you don't know what he's planning to do with his response from you..

I tend to agree will all the comments, just a brief response that I'm sorry he was not pleased with his visit.
.
However, Gomez does not have good night vision so we do plug in a nightlight in the bathroom when we travel.
.
I also have that - the VFD has a light on their parking lot that shines directly into the "workshop" window and is a direct shot into my bedroom. My guestroom drapes are lined and although I have had a few unplug the clock/radio, no one has complained of not dark enough - YET.

I tend to agree with PS as a reply goes. Not a lot you can do after the fact.
One thing that popped up in reading this.... there was no fail safe mechanism that night. I am not suggesting you did anything wrong. It sounds as if that was explained. Did anyone take them to their room? That could have helped address any immediate need.
I guess I just thought about how guest management could have mitigated some of the challenges. That is definitely more challenging with a fill-in.

Sounds like he didn't like the price tag and is trying to get his money back. Sometimes I can't sleep in a new place but I wouldn't write and complain since its me not the room. Just be glad he probably won't be coming back. I would also report to TA about a negative review threat.
My reply: "We are sorry to hear that you didn't sleep well here. One of us has volunteered to spend a night in the room to check on the light issue. Glad to hear that you sleep fine at the other place and got caught up on your sleep. Due to an emergency I was out of town but I'm glad someone was able to get you into a room when you showed up at 11pm without a reservation so the room was not pre-heated on arrival since all rooms have individual heating and cooling for the guests preferences."

Quick question as I plan for the future, you say your drape are lined, by lined do you mean a normal lining layer of material or a hotel type drape with a blackout lining that totally block all light?
Our curtains are a mostly black material with a lining layer, but not a blackout layer, knowing how others approach this will help me plan
