Smoke alarm goes off at 11 PM.
Third floor room was at fault. They had blown out their candles after a romantic evening and set off the smoke alarm.
Considering big signs that say, "No smoking, no candles, no open flames of any kind."
What do you do?
(When we moved in, we took down the 'no smoking' signs because we thought they looked unwelcoming and thought they were unnecessary.)

Here is my welcome sheet on the front of the info book so far:
Please let us know what we can do to make your stay more comfortable.
Common areas: Please make yourself at home in our common areas; the front porch, living room and koi pond "beach." Please do not feed the fish or toss rocks into the pond.
Breakfast: Hot breakfast buffet is served each morning between 8 and 10. Continental fare is available at 7:30. Please notify us if you have food allergies.
Take Out: If you bring in take out food, please feel free to enjoy it in any of our dining areas. If you order delivery, please wait for delivery at the front door. Please leave dishes and trash in the "dirty dishes" containers in the dining room.
House Rules: No smoking, no candles, no open flame of any kind.
Please respect our other guests and our neighbors. Quiet hours are between 10 PM and 7 AM. Please do not fee the fish or the cat. She is only kidding when she tells you we don't feed her.
Check out time is 11 AM. Please remember to return your key.
WiFi is available at no additional charge, password:

We specifically have it noted in our brief pre-arrival letter:
NO SMOKING OR CANDLES: All rooms are non-smoking in ordinance with State law. Smoking is permitted only in outside areas 20 feet from any building per State Law. Due to fire and insurance codes the burning of candles is also prohibited for the safety of all.
I would hold their candles for safe keeping. This is a life safety issue for every one in the building. Period. Not to mention their Disturbing the Peace.

We used to find shower caps fastened over the smoke detectors with rubber bands, or we'd find them n the trash - as if we didn't know why. I stopped providing them when I realized they weren't being used to keep hair dry.

Because ... the rules don't apply to me and
see, nothing bad happened.

wow. Yeah, we were pissed. They are young and probably had never been to a B&B. I remember years ago, articles on business travel telling us all to bring scented candles in our luggage to light when we get to the hotel. Yeah. No.

Did you have candles in the room or did they bring them.
You know nobody reads the info book especially millenials...Put out a nice discreet note someplace. NO SMOKING NO CANDLES!

They brought them. We do not have any in the house.

We also had flameless candles - with little tent cards right beside them showing how to turn on the 'flame'. We'd find them with burnt 'wicks' where people tried to light them. Some even took out the batteries and left them beside the candles. Not old batteries in place of the new ones, although that happened. The little on/off switch was right next to the battery compartment so that one baffled me.

End of story:
The couple apologized profusely at breakfast for setting off the smoke detectors. They also apologized for spilling red wine on the tufted arm chair. WHAT???? DH ran upstairs and was able to get most of the wine stain off the chair. He says you can only see it if you are looking for it.
I knew when I bought them that I would regret light colored stuffed chairs in a guest room. They lasted a whole year.
To the couple as they leave, "buh, buh!"
