We are seeing an interesting trend. The other inns in town are reporting a quiet spring, but we are busier than ever. We are getting a lot of one night stays. More work, less loyalty for future, but we are full. The other inns refuse one night stays and direct them to us.
We have told them several times that one nighters are filling us up, but they don't want the hassle.
Interesting to us. $15 to the housekeeper for a one nighter. So the room rate minus $15 = way more than $0.
Just a different look at it. I know many don't like one nighters (I don't like them either) but they pay.
What has your experience been?

We do one nighters for all the rooms in the winter/spring. During season we have two rooms which are the easiest to clean and they are one nighters all year around. Last summer the rooms were booked Thurs-Sun with one nighters.

I love that criteria! Easiest to clean. It is truly a constant learning curve.

Even accepting one night stays we are empty..
Do you think it's the Trump factor? I know most of our Europeans are on their way to Maine.

We're not getting any euro guests. No Canadians. Only our usual repeats. But not even all of them.

We do one night stays all days until Memorial Day weekend, then only Saturdays have a two night minimum.
This is going to be the worst April in the past 9 years! Prices were rock bottom low the whole month, starting at $115. Bookings for the first half of May are by far the worst in 12 years. The second half looks almost normal. June through October is down 33% from last year, which was a record year.

I have always taken one-nighters. I accept the crumbs as it pays the bills. I am, except for weekends perhaps, a pass-through location.

We did one night weekdays. It was the cleaning that finally got me. So you have that covered so I'd take one nighters that way

I had a two-prong approach of accepting one-nighters while at the same time offering a buy-two-get-the-third-night-free promotion.
The extra work on the one-nighters was offset by the less work done with the 3-night stays.
Had a good April as April's go.

Just talked to Hubby. We had a one nighter from Germany. They are on their way to Bar Harbor and then back to Boston, but changed their plans so they can stop in our place on the way back.
A one-nighter paid off. Unusual.

I hate to say it momma, but it helps me to know it's not just us. I think there is one place in town that has about half their usual numbers.
Yes, absolutely the worst spring ever. We've been here 13 years and even during the 2008-09 slump it wasn't this bad.

I agree, it's better to know it's not just us. And regretfully, I feel a bit better knowing that our closest competition is worse off. Their rezies from mid-May to October are 70% less than ours.... This is only their 4th year, but we knew the POs (actually our POs) that re-opened the new place in 07 after they sold us and they were doing gangbusters. And the NOs were doing just fine until this year too. They've upped their prices big time and are also on Bking.om. So OTAs aren't the reason. We're not on anything but TC. Have seen a big uptick in TC searches on RK. Also, I frantically searched Air and we are fortunate to have negligible listings anywhere near us. So that's not it either.
'Tis finally a beautious wkend here, we should be full.... then again, economic growth report just released for first quarter shows economy slip sliding away...

We take anything and everything been lucky with taking 4 nighters working on a project for 4 weeks - however too many people hang out for too many nights for two long then end up empty or 1 nights ie this weekend is a 3 day weekend - we did 2 nights then dropped to 1 - we are as full as we want to be - other places half empty as were hanging out for 3 nights till 2 weeks to go - well all the 2 night people have already booked and gone so you are left with 1 night - its all about knowing when and where to drop.

It's sunny and 80 where I am. Bringing the heat along with me when I go home tomorrow.

You know my best friends here and they are quite worried. Worst spring ever for them too. I keep telling them it will start to pick up soon. I sure hope so. We have a new attraction which is starting to bring in new tourists and in July they will have 20,000 folks here for a big shindig.
Not my thing but I love they are supporting our town economy. Cooters in the Valley

Yes, twenty minutes vs forty-five to an hour! Give me the easiest ones to flip every day!

Actually this has been our best winter and spring so far. We thought it was because of the mild winter, people wanted to travel. Sorry to be hogging all the guests…. I'll try to be sharing in the future…. maybe….. Grin!
