Does everyone else see ads for other hotels and B&Bs in the sidebar of this site? The very first time I logged in, I was greeted by an ad for Airbnb. Today's ad is for hotel rates on Expedia

I do not even notice them any longer. Swirt - the wonderful person who created this site for us and maintains it has to pay for it somehow, so he sells ads in the sidebar. We are so grateful to have this place (he will not take our money- we offered).

Yes, everyone sees the ads. They pick up on the topics under discussion, which is why you see a lot of ads for hotels, etc. I'm getting ads telling me my rates have dropped and I can see how low if I only click the link to go to TripAdvisor.
If we discuss frying pans, sheets, towels, you name it, an ad shows up.
The site gets paid for by people clicking those ads. Swirt also has one that shows up for donations to the red Cross, and something else.

I used "AdBlockerPlus" for a while and didn't see any ads here, but a lot of other sites had recently been detecting that I had an adblocker installed and were asking me to disable it for their site before they would show me their content, so I have turned if off altogether now. Certainly on this site, with the ads limited to the sidebar, they are pretty easy to ignore.

See, how reactions could be different. If I could buy a batch of articles for a small amount of money, I might be interested, but in their monthly packages, I'm not. So instead of turning off my blocker... I either open up the article in an incognito window. Or I actually put that website in my banned source list and don't see it anymore.
