We went to a funeral on Monday.  We'd known about it for over a week and had arranged for the housekeeper to stay and watch the house.

The funeral was for my Dad, so we HAD to go.  We also had a houseful of relatives.   Here we all are at 9:30 AM, dressed up and looking fine and the clock starts ticking.....tick tock.  Where is she?   Call her.   No answer.   She promised.    What time is it?    Call the other housekeeper.  She'll come in on her day off but it will be a half hour.    Yikes.  We need to leave!    I finally called a friend who told me she was just on her way to the church for the funeral, but would come over and watch the house.

As we are getting in our cars in the procession to the church, here comes the housekeeper's car going a bit faster than this road calls for.  Whipped by us toward the inn.   My friend made it to the church before we did!

Anyway, we made it.    The housekeeper brought her kids!   I had thought a week's notice and her agreeing to it, meant the kids were taken care of.   I guess next time I have to bury my Dad, I'll know what questions to ask.

P.S. her excuse was that her phone had lost its charge.   Huh? So she didn't know what day and time it was??????????

Beach, so sorry for the loss of your Dad.  Try to take some time for yourself.  Grieving kind of sneaks up on you if you ignore it.

Thank you and thank all of you.

It continues because the house is there now.   We reorganized some furniture yesterday and it feels fresher.   Lots of work ahead.  A sibling will remain there, (not us), so it won't be sold right away.

Beachy, hugs and prayers for you!  Glad to know you were able to be there even with all the added stress of inn stuff.

I'm very sorry about your dad.

Some people don't do well when asked to do something out of the ordinary ... they forget, show up late, get it wrong. Sounds like she meant she was 'running late' and couldn't call you.

I'm glad it all worked out. Hopefully the children were not a problem.

So sorry to hear about your dad. This profession does not lend itself to unplanned, personal circumstances. Stressful for you.  So sorry.

Sorry for your loss.

Not to be too cold about this, but what time is it when your housekeeper is late on the day you're supposed to bury your dad? It's time to find a new housekeeper.

You are correct.   We don't like her that much.   But it's August and late in the season to train someone new.

Yes, when possible have Plan B lined up before you fire Plan A!

Thanks, all.    He was 91 and had a very good life.  The last few weeks were difficult, but he died in his home with his family there.

Please accept my condolences on the loss of your Dad. Becoming the "lead" generation is difficult. I hope you are OK and I am very sorry the housekeeper was so inconsiderate, especially considering the circumstances.

Sorry you lost your day. I'm glad things worked out OK, but yes, it seems like things like this always happen. Things rarely go as planned, I guess because we all have too many irons in the fire.
