Just got our annual bad review. We really get one or two every summer. This one complained about everything from cleanliness to the pillows to the spotty internet. Even complained that there was no ac. The nighttime temps were in the 50's. Hated the shower. I assume because it's small. They left before breakfast. I was surprised but whatever. Until I got the bad review.
Ive already answered the review pointing out that most people like an ocean breeze instead of ac and that they missed banana cream pancakes. I didn't address the bad pillows. I did address the shower by suggesting he was used to oversized contemporary showers. They are just complainers that are expecting a five star hotel but booking an antique house.

Whaaa... so cranky. This is one of these cases where they bring their attitude to it and so nothing can live up to what they want, because they have ruined it before their stay.
On my side, just received a delightful G review, to move the fake one down.

We had a pillow complainer. On her way out the door she turned and said, 'just a suggestion - pillows don't last forever.' Total snark. Just because they weren't the kind of pillow she wanted.

I felt my pillows in one room and knew immediately that someone had stolen mine. I use stamina fiber pillows with a specific fill that is good for side or back sleepers.
Pillows can last for a long while, if you have washable pillows and keep them covered in pillow protectors. It's human sweat that is the problem.

Yup, I got a bad one too. A year can't go by without someone thinking that all the rest of the people who love it can't be right. Ours also had a complaint about lack of AC, mind you there are ceiling fans and it got up to a whole 82 degrees without humidity that day. Always cools down at night. Nope, these folks hated our place from before they got out of the car. They had just come from a fancy VRBO on the beach. They never even expected an historic 1894 farmhouse in the country. It was so not their style and were only here for a wedding.
Treated me like crap during their stay.
I take pride that even though they treated us like dirt, we hosted them with grace and dignity. I'll never go down to their level. I'm still working out my response.
Sorry you got one of those horrid people too Beachy!

Mentioning the VRBO they stayed at is a violation of TA's own ToS. Your review shouldn't be a comparison. Might be time for a reply that has a little snark, like we are sorry you didn't enjoy your stay and we didn't enjoy how you treated the staff. :)

Beach, I don't see your innkeeper response on TA?
Just snarky, really. Browsing this person's reviews, there is a lot of that. To the point of complimenting some barbecue place with great food but saying their music is 'lame'.

As a person looking for a place to stay, I always look at other reviews. And when I see a review like that, I check out the reviewer.

I found that people want the a/c's humming through October. Up in Maine, I didn't have any. The top floor (third floor) was brutal in summer. We tried the kind with the big hose you put out the window because we had no window sills and needed better wiring .. we really needed the traditional kind. I think the new owner rewired things and got a/c up there. Your TA listing says air conditioned ... is your place air conditioned?

Innkeeper responses don't appear for a few days. They have to check them first.

I think we all get a few of those reviews each year, folks that were unhappy when they arrived, sometimes one just was there against their will so to speak, no way they are going to be happy with anything or anyone.
Now air-conditioning or lack thereof, we didn't have any when we arrived years ago, it would cool most evening, but when folks would arrive mid-afternoon I couldn't deny that it was too warm, of course I admit I don't like hot weather, I'm happiest in the 35 to 65 range, ran away from home to the mountains for cooler weather and I still like my AC.

It's there this morning. People need to know an old house will be quirky.

Excellent response! I admire you for not being snarky, which for me, takes at least a dozen or so rewrites!

What a great response. You turned it into an ad for your place!

So I forgot about the comment from the 'reviewer' and started thinking about your yummy breakfast.

thanks. I was afraid the ac vs sea breeze comment might sound snarky.

Got my annual baddie too, though not on TA. Of the many - there was one legitimate complaint that has since been addressed. Didn't respond and it has now been buried by more happy people.

I've had my narky one of the season too, but it's in a foreign language so wont even show for most of my potential guests, so no point replying because it will just draw attention to it.

So today's review kind of contradicted Nasty's review almost point by point. Specifically mentioned that AC was not needed. :)
Also called us, "...possibly our best BnB stay EVER!"
Some people are nice.
