Oh dear ... how can you stand to read these reviews? I suppose you must, and respond when it's warranted and helpful. But all this critiquing is just too much..
Yes, but the question is, how do you respond when it's clear that the person wanted a 5 star hotel and wasn't doing anything to help themselves. I read the reviews of the places they went to eat and realize that everything I said, went right in one ear and out the other. How would they have realized at all if we cared, when they didn't listen to a thing we said.
A good stay has two components to it, the innkeeper and the guest. A guest can ruin their stay as well. They don't listen, they don't care, they don't ask the right question. For example, in this city asking for a "French" restaurant means nothing. No, you need to ask for a type. You need to give me price range, atmosphere, distance, alcohol service or bring-your-own, you need to know if you want slow (local) service, versus the rushed service in the US. I can get you what you want, if you ask and give me the details. If what you want is service and the food and price doesn't matter, I have a place for that. Now, if you want service and great food... you are SOL, because if a restaurant can fill a table 3 times a night, the servers will ensure adequate service, but fawning service? Nope. And it's clear that this person wanted fawning service... but never said so.
But I can also tell you that I had to repeatedly try to redirect conversations around this person... their politics were quite right-wing for here or even for where they came from.
