My debit card snapped at the start of the summer so I ordered a new one, which meant my bank issued a new card number and cancelled the old one.
This week I logged onto my adw ords account for the first time for ages and discovered it had been suspended because they could no longer charge my card.
Just had our busiest summer ever so I think the lesson there is I have to be a lot more proactive about upping and lowering my daily budget depending on the time of year and if the summer is busy I have to switch it off completely.

Do you feel it has worked well for you at other times? I understand they may work well for the chain that does a lot of advertising, but do you see a noticable advantage for the mom and pop operation?
I know I look at things on the internet and then the ads follow me around for days after, but the truth is I don't often purchase on the basis of those advertisements. Most often either I was going to purchase the product anyway and went to the internet for some specification or to read reviews. Perhaps I just looked for some future ideas or to check out something I would purchase locally.

It does drive quite a bit of traffic to my website, maybe my being in such an iconic location meaning I can target my keywords very specifically helps.

You should actually put only the countries that you target into the mix.
Before I did that, I found that websites in places like Morocco and Algeria would be clicking on my ads. They were telling people to click and close to get income for their websites. So we removed countries that normally don't visit us at all. In my case, that meant that I could exclude all of Asia, Africa, South and Central America. And even a good part of Europe.

I tried adwords earlier this year. The ad headline said, "Get 20% off your second night!" Not a single reservation asked about receiving 20% off, and you know that if folks saw the opportunity for a discount, they'd ask. Guess adwords doesn't work well in my city. ??

I've published discount codes in ads for years. Different codes for different ads, to track success. Enter this code when booking online to get $X off. As far as I know, not a soul has ever entered a code.

I'm not positive, though. I might have missed it. I asked ResKey once if there was some way we could know when they use a discount code. A report or something, and he said no, that's not tracked.

I think the discount would show up in the room rate, and maybe in the "discount" section of the report "revenue by item" ?
I've not had much luck with folks entering codes in ResKey for discounts. For about a month, I offered a discount code to people who booked online, and it was being used fairly regularly. Then I had someone who called & wanted me to take their res info, but still demanded the $10 discount for booking online. I tried to explain that the discount was because it saves me time when people fill out the forms themselves, but the caller got really irate. That put an end to that "promo". smh

I don't have any discounts going right now, but my Rez system has a place to enter one. I get calls asking me what the discount code is.
I've tried to run a special discount for a certain period of time. Ex - use code to take 10% off stay in March or April. But, my Rez system doesn't understand the code is only valid for a stay during those months. The system is set up that the code is only valid to enter during those months, but you can use it for any dates.

I have thought about making one out of wire and concrete and putting it at the edge of the river ... but it wouldn't be famous
