Hello. It's been a very dead season for me so far this year and I haven't really been feeling up to par.
But we finally had a reservation for the night to which the young adults asked for a 10 am breakfast. No problem... Woke up in the best mood I've been in over 5 weeks. Got everything laid out prefect and made a great breakfast. Just before time to serve, I ran across a piece of paper at the very end of the long counter, hided by their old pizza box, was a piece paper stating that they had to leave early and wouldn't be needing breakfast after all!
Boy the things I would of loved to have said to them... All that food, time and effort for nothing!
This has happened a few times in the past. We have been a B and B for 16 years.
Split milk, right?!
Guess I'm starting to get a little burnt out over things like this and being so slow. Makes me wonder what it's all for.
 
While I understand, it's really their vacation. They were nice enough to leave a note and they paid for it, even if they didn't have it. It's one of these things you just have to let go. If it can't be saved, put it in the car, take it over to the shelter and let them use it.

I hear you. I sent some to work with my husband and the rest the dog and cat ate...
It's just me. Not having a good year.

That is too bad ... but, yes, they did leave a note. (in a very odd place!) Was it just one couple?
I once had a whole house full of guests misunderstand that breakfast came with the room and they all went off to eat together someplace. A whole house booking! I heard car doors and looked out to see them driving off. I was stunned that I hadn't communicated very well with any of the 17 people about breakfast. Turns out the 'leader' (a force of nature) told them no, no breakfast ... so off they all went.
All that lovely food!
I myself had a lovely breakfast that morning. My trash man and egg man and laundry service man each got a fabulous breakfast when they showed up. Nice coincidence that they all were scheduled for that morning. They all thought I was an outrageous flirt! Inviting them in for breakfast.
I wrapped some other things in foil and delivered it to a couple artists and the few lobster men and women I guess just getting IN to the harbor. Walking around with a picnic basket of food. At first I was really upset, but it led me to some really good will (and strange looks) in the harbor. I couldn't go near the general store as they sold breakfast. But I didn't carry coffee. Told them to come see me in the kitchen in a while and they could have coffee.

As for slow.... is it slow because it's seasonal, or are there other reasons? For example, it's winter at the moment around here. I don't deeply discount winter because we are crazy busy in the summer. I ensure my service is the same and do things like fix things, paint, stock shelves and take pictures.

I used to get really, really bent out of shape about folks skipping breakfast. Then I got slammed in a review for telling the guests (2 couples traveling together) that they should've let me know before I was in the middle of serving it! It made absolutely no sense to me that they couldn't stay an extra 30 minutes to sit down and eat when they lived less than an hour away. "We have to get back to our kids." Um... ok....
Now, I just grit my teeth, shrug my shoulders, and roll with it. If it's something that will keep, I will refrigerate or freeze the leftovers. If not, my hubby enjoys the treat of taking breakfast to work a few days during the week. Wasted food is practically a sin IMHO!
 
I had a wedding group once that did that to me. Mentioned AFTER I'd put out a full buffet for 15, that they had a post wedding brunch to go to. They had been with us for more than one day, so they knew what breakfast looked like.
I learned to ask wedding groups.

Pissy pillows and shams, crap on the robes; broken china and wine or coffee pored down the walls. I wonder why I bother. It's not like I'm making any money or getting any appreciation for my efforts. We bend over backwards for our guests.
I use to love this B n B and meeting all the wonderful people. My quality of guests have changed.
This use to be my little peace of heaven. (We live in the country) Now I don't enjoy anything about it.

I agree. These guest just live 15 minutes away and had every opportunity to change the time. From now on I will check the drive way for their car before I start the breakfast. I too hate waste.

When was he time you raised your rates? Sometimes the reason for the change in the type of guests is the rates are too low. Quality people question why are rates so low. If the rates beint too low is not the answer, could they be high enough that you are now getting the "entitled" crowd. Just trying to figure a reason for the change in guests, not implying anything about you or your B & B.

It has been a while since I had a rate increase. But I think they are as high as I can ask for. They are very nice rooms but not overly huge. We do offer a lot of amenities both in house and out doors.
I think I'm just not very good at marketing. It cost so much to advertise and there's so much out there, don't really know what would be the best place.

Right now I am waiting on a company to redo my website. It seems about everything is on hold till he gets it done which is taking along time and he's already paid. Boy did I screw up there!

I try yo stay on top of things when possib;e (that is not going to cost the earth OR be difficult to maintain as I am inherintly lazy). Several years ago, Innkeep told us about a program Tesla had to install chargers. I applied and got them. I do not know if they are still doing the program, but do some checking into it.
I have has a few Teslas, but there are more of the non-Tesla electric cars out there (they gave me that charger also). Last week I had a Chevy Volt stay as he went on his trip and as he returned home. I asked his permission (even though legally I did not need it) to take a photo of hes car and post it on FB. He thanked me for asking and said sure (they are proud of owning them and want to show them off). I posted 2 photos of that Bolt and then decided to do a FB Boost with it. I targeted men and women 40+ living in DC, Baltimore +25 miles, and Pittsburgh +25 miles who were interested in electric cars or electric and hybrid cars and named several electric vehicles/ I ran this for 7 days with a budget of $20. There was a separate "interest count" on the non-boosted post. Here is the screen shot (I even learned how to do a screen shot) of the end of the Boost. These are people who would probably not have seen anything about me without it. Reservation results will not be known for a while.

Some damage is just cost of business. Hence my love of dollar store wine glasses.
My system for getting someone to do something... call, and be an annoyance. The more they hear from you, the more they want to get it done and be done with it. Though, I put mine out to do on a jobber site, with the money in escrow, so they know it's there... but can't get it until it's done. It's amazing how quick they can be when they see the money is there... but can't get it.
Have you considered asking for it back, so you can hire someone else? That might light a fire.
 
No fun to feel like that. Here's wishing you a fabulous tomorrow that is the turn around point for your year!
 
We have a breakfast menu where guests select the items they want for breakfast and must leave the filled-out menu outside their room door before 9 pm or else they don't get breakfast in the morning.
