Many of us have spoken of the value of receiving confirmation that emails we send are delivered AND OPENED, so you know they went to a valid address and that they didn't end up in a spam folder.
Of course, most people won't bother to send confirmation replies if you request it via one of those "the sender has asked for confirmation" messages. I hate those myself.
I've found THIS FREE SERVICE that will handle it for you. Of course, email open confirmation is built in to Reservation Key and perhaps some other reservation software, but not everybody has that, and sometimes I need to send mail to guests from outside ResKey.
To use the GetNotify service, you send the email as you usually would, but when you enter the "TO" email address, you add .getnotify.com to it. That causes the email to go first to GetNotify, they add the notification code then forward it on to the recipient. When the recipient opens the mail, you get an email confirmation from GetNotify that includes the following info...
  • Date and time the email was opened.
  • Location (city, country) where it was opened.
  • Recipient's IP address
  • How long they read it (I guess, how long it was open before they moved on to do something else)
  • And info about their web browser, operating system, etc.
I tried it a couple of times to day and it seem to work well.

I'm not sure that works with all email services. Especially the ones that have a warning message that certain content, photos, etc have been blocked.
I know constant contact shows who has opened emails and yet I have guests who quote chapter and verse from the newsletter, but their email never shows up in the opened list.

It seems NOTHING works with all email services. Some people have things so locked down almost nothing gets through to them. You do what you can do.

Well, at least it's something. So frustrating when people say they weren't told that, didn't get an email, no ... nothing in their spam folder, you obviously didn't send it ... you know the drill.
I use mailchimp and can see who got the email and who opened it but I don't know about any that might be blocking. It amazes me when people say I didn't send them the newsletter or the notice and I can see that they not only received it and opened it, they (or whoever is mucking about in their email) clicked on a link within what I sent.
I used to get a little notice in my email saying 'the sender would like confirmation that you recevied this email' and I could decline to have that confirmation sent. I never seem to see that anymore.
