This happens at least a couple of times/week - guests come to door to check in and as soon as I hand them the keys they turn around to leave.
I have taken their payment, handed them the keys, and am about to show them to their room. No. They are going back outside. I've asked, 'Would you like me to show you where your room is before you get your luggage?' They look at me like I have 2 heads. They WERE going to their room. Isn't it outside?
I want to snark and say if you brought camping gear, have at it. I do the polite thing and say all the rooms are in this building. (The only building, so I again wonder where they were going!)

Habit catches us, perhaps normally guests of motels with outside hallways, of course I get the other side, children or occasional adult that walks into our apartment to stand by the fireplace.

Silverspoon please don't pick on us motel folks too hard, some of us anyway, do care about providing a delightful experience for our guests, just without the breakfast and a different physical style building, but hopefully you wouldn't feel too out of place in one of our rooms.
By the way, if I didn't say it before, I love your garden tag line, of course, yes, I'd be the one sitting in the shade, fortunately Maxine is a country girl and has spent 25 years in the dirt and heat making our garden beautiful, I tend to paint my flowers on the wall and call it done.

Sorry Jim, upon reading my comment I see that it comes across as snarky, when I was only trying to compliment Maddie...not put motels down!

I was blessed to be going to spend the night at Jim Boone's the night I was told my husband died. They actually invited me to return - which I did last night. He took me on the 50 cent tour of his area. WOW! I had no idea there is a National Park Service facility there. The Moses Cone house and grounds - hiking, house - Flat Top Manor - the place is wonderful.
It is not B & B, but it is comfortable, cozy, and has all the amenities we offer. He has made it so comfy. Last time I suggested grab bars at the showers. The grab bar was there! It truly is a great place to stay. (And I am ashamed to admit I was the 9:30 AM arrival - but I had planned to help with the housekeeping and I knew they did not do breakfast.)

Nah, Silverspoon, don't take me too serious, I was just cutting up and picking with you for fun.
I'm happy that I have met so many nice folks and learned so much on this forum over the last five years, hopefully I'm no longer the typical motel. The word "motel" is in our name, that's the way the business was set up, not allowed to serve food, and at this point in life, too old to change horses, but hope we've been able to add some of the nicer touches and personality that I have learned from all on the forum that sets us apart as different from larger properties.

Thanks for visiting and sharing time, so many more things I'd enjoy showing in the area if you pass this way in the future. Early doesn't worry me as long as you overlooked the sawdust from my workshop projects, our apartment space always seems to be the neglected area, one day should we live so long I hope our spare bedrooms will be neat for family and friends rather than "junk" rooms.
