Here is another one. Its that email for multiple nights for several rooms then asking for a total.  If I play along and reply they give me two cc #s  to split the amount between. Depending my mood and time is how long I string them along.

Question is what is the scam? I have looked up the card #s given once and they were valid. Do they expect you to charge those cards and then ask for a refund in another form or back to different cards? I am just not wise in what they are up to. Wise enough to know its BS.

If they would spend that time and energy on a legit job they would be successful. Well I wont waste anymore of my time with playing along even if it is to mess with them.

Given innkeepers/hoteliers are still falling for it, they ARE successful. When it no longer works they will move onto a different scam.

The scam is to get you to play along so they ID your e-mail as a Live One to sell to other scammers. Also as you guessed, to use a stolen card and have you do the refund to another.
