TOTALLY off topic! This is a feel good story

Our 11 year old son was diagnosed 8 months ago with a severe hearing deficiency. He needs two hearing aids that cost about $3000 for the pair. Have to pay out of pocket- not covered by insurance. Cash up front before they can even be ordered.

I've taken a couple of extra part time jobs so that we can continue homeschooling our kids. DH works like a fiend so that I can stay home with the kids -God love 'em!

A month ago we were at the County Fair and at the Merchant's Building, I put my name in a info box for the local hearing aid company. One of the questions was if the info was for myself, my spouse, or my parent. I didn't check any of those, but wrote in that it was for our 10.5 year old son.

A week later, I got a call from the company. MY CARD was drawn to win a free hearing aid!!! After meeting with the audiologist about this free hearing aid and telling him about our son and the complications he has, I offered to walk away and let him offer someone else this (aging adult) aid. He declined and told me that he always hopes that the name they draw from the bag is the one who needs it the most.

With tears in my eyes, I assured him that we were definately grateful for this.

Bonus: He offered to sell us the second one that makes a matched set for $1000. So, essentially, our son is getting a $3000 pair for $1000.

There are two ways to live you life: as if nothing is a miracle or as if everything is a miracle.

Just had to share...I'm fair to bursting at the seams with wanting to tell this uplifting story!!!

UPDATE: He picked them up TODAY!!! What a difference. What an amazing difference. He can HEAR. He can H.E.A.R.

FWIW, hold your hands up to both of your ears and try to carry on a conversation with someone. What you hear is the way our son hears. Scratch that, USED to hear.

Here is a VERY PUBLIC acknowledgement to the sweetest, most kindest innmate on this forum. Words cannot express how thoughtful and generous your gesture was.

Your Virginian generosity will be remembered for a LONG time!

That story made this old fart tear up.

It's nice to know that there are good people still out there.

I think my favorite catch phrase of all time is

"daily commit random acts of kindness and senseless beauty"   The thing is, it doesn't cost a thing and it's usually very easy.  Why don't we do it more?

That is such great news. It infuriates me about the insurance company not paying for it though. They pay for viagra but not hearing aids???? Something's gotta change.....

Fantastic news....   Your little guy will be wanting to hear everything!  My Dad was a hearing specialist and when he was able to fit a young person with an aide, he said it was overwelming to watch their faces when they started hearing things they never did before.  God answers prayers!

Emily, I have always had the Faith that the LORD will provide - and HE does. This is wonderful! May it fit and do the job so your son can HEAR the joyful noise I am making about this!

This is fantastic, so happy for your family.  I have always wondered at the way insurance companies get around paying for these completely medically necessary things...as if hearing is a luxury or something???

Sweet.

We have a guest here this weekend who came from Canada to get his hearing aids. He told Gomez they are $3k each ear and that Medicare won't cover them either. He's a disabled Vet so he got them at the VA for free. He's testing them out over the weekend and can go in tomorrow before he goes home if there are any problems.
