why this disclaimer about being sued in every post that mentions a product? can't we say if we like something or if we don't? i read the news stories and other things and notice there are comments now on just about everything .. some rude and ridiculous ... some comment just to make the comment i guess.

if i have an honest opinion about a product i've used, something i've read, etc., i want to give it.  since i don't have much more than two nickels to rub together, to quote rocky in i guess sequel number 5 , 'sue me for what?'

May be the same old same old...but no one else has published "the book" we all keep saying we should write someday...he did.

Take it or leave it. Someone may be interested. as far as commenting on other things. Feel free to do so I think especially if you have strong feelings about it one way or another. I think the sue factor comes in when you talk about "persons."

I think the caveat about commenting on these particular posts (in the resources section) is more directed at the person who would say, 'Piece of junk, wouldn't use it, the person who invented it ought to be shot, ' who has never actually used the product, or who just likes to complain about anything produced by XYZ company.

If you bought something that kept having to be returned and it showed up here with someone raving about it, why not post that you are not a happy camper?

As long as it's true and the experience is yours, I don't see why not. I'd just avoid derogatory language and casting aspersions on a particular person.

How many innkeepers have sued guests for making uncomplimentary remarks on boards and review sites? Isn't it the same thing?

You don't get sued for uncomplimentary remarks, you get sued for damages caused by unfounded, misleading, or slanderous statements.  Innkeepers don't typically consider suing for comments on review sites anyway because it would cost them $100 just to call their lawyer for a quick discussion about it.  The big companies sue because their lawyer is sitting in an office collecting the same salary whether someone is being sued or not.

Experiences and honest evaluative comments are always encouraged.  The warning is two part.  For one, the resources section has more staying power because the topic does not get buried over time by other topics the way things do in the forum, so I am trying to keep comments in the resources on-track, thoughtful and related to the product so that the resource section is useful for the long term.  I'd prefer it not get filled up with chatter, that's what the forum is for.

The second part is for exactly what it says.  Companies get very defensive if their livlihood gets threatened by public comments.  Remember when the cattle association sued Oprah for an off the cuff comment about beef?   Lawsuits are expensive affairs for anyone that  doesn't have a legal dept at your disposal who get paid whether they are in a lawsuit or not. These don't got to small claims court where you defend yourself, they go directly to civil court.  For us little people, they get expensive real fast, even if it never goes to a trial.   I've seen lawsuits develop over comments on forums I've been involved with, including one directed at me, so I offer the warning as a speed bump to have people choose their words and statements carefully.  Also as the owner of the site, I do it to insulate myself.

Interesting all the talk about being sued. I wrote the book and I'm not going to sue anyone (don't believe in it) even if they say the book isn't worth the paper it's written on.

Hi innkeeper and welcome to INNspiring.com.  Glad to hear you are not the litigious type and congratulations on writing the book that many of us have been cooking up in our heads for a while now.

Thanks for the welcome. The book was fun to write and writing it affirmed, once again, that becoming an innkeeper was a wise move and that innkeeping is a noble occupation.

Anyone who would like to see a few excerpts from the book--as opposed to talking about what might happen if they get critical--can visit the book's web site at www.aninnkeeper.com.

That link didn't work. It went to a 'did you mean' screen and gave a list of options. Can you check the link to see if something is misspelled?

Sorry about the "bad" link. I'm technologically disadvantaged. The right link is www.aninnkeepersjournal.com

Thank you! I didn't get the other link to work, then got "sidetracked" as is in our duty statement.

I already love it.  I will pass this on to others. Your humor already has me hook, line and sinker.

What is odd is that the comments I am reading from "How to Annoy an Innkeeper" ARE THE REGULAR comments we get, so no wonder I am always in a state of constant annoyance.

Thanks Catlady

While that was the most unusual wedding we've ever had at the inn, it's just one example of why running a B&B is such a delight. All in all, it's the people who come to the inn that make the experience of innkeeping worth all the work.
