    Tipping again

I leave tip envelopes in the rooms which say something like: "Our staff works hard to make your stay an excellent one. Your gratuity is appreciated" I get HUGE tips sometimes (over $100) and I put them ALL in an envelope and divvy them up between staff the 1st week of December. They get an...

Dietary needs vs. Food Preference ?

I can easily accommodate vegetarians by leaving out the meat but I won't do vegan and if they say no gluten, no dairy, no eggs etc. I usually offer them a discount and a 10% off coupon for a local eatery. Let someone else deal with them. I can only do what I can do, I have learned that some...

    Red Chair Travels

Does anyone have experience with the Red Chair Travels and can you share your feedback/experience. I have been asked to host and am excited but was wondering if any of you have hosted the Red Chair and how it was for you.

    Favorite Spices

Truffle salt http://www.amazon.com/Casina-Rossa-Truffle-Nicola-Laurentiis/dp/B000E5SGI4 and smoked paprika (I got mine at Target) Both AMAZING! Target has great spices in larger containers for really good prices.

    Starting out...

Hello Madeline, Yes you are right, as you say that "there is a market for family-friendly B&B's but it's not a big market" so it would have limited appeal and if one were trying to run a financially viable & successful business I guess it would not be advisable to potentially limit ones...

    Raised by wolves

    I want one too!

    Starting out...

I had 3 kids (now grown) and I wouldn't have dreamed on inflicting them on my B & B guests (nor my guests on them) had I been in the business at that time. Just having my small dog who is obedient and well behaved is an issue at times with guests. I love kids, animals etc. and so do most...

    Providing Ice to Guests

I have not had any complaints about bad taste or melting but I don't use it myself. Guests seem to like it. This is the one I got: Emerson Ice Machine I had to replace it once already about 1 year ago but it is inexpensive enough to make it replaceable. Nothing nowadays lasts very long...

    Valentine's Weekend was MESSY!

I would not be surprised if the "carpet cleaner" is the same formula as the "Fabric spray' because carpet is after all fabric.

    Valentine's Weekend was MESSY!

I am soooooo careful when I give guests any "treats". I would never give anything like cupcakes that are eaten with hands and crumble. I give cookies that are bite-sized and just pop into the mouth. I give bite sized chocolates. I no longer have candles in the room. I never offer flower...

    Providing Ice to Guests

I got an ice machine at Target. It works well and makes ice amazingly fast. Make sure you instruct guests to refill the reservoir with water when they take ice so it does not run out of ice. (One less thing for you to do). I simply wrote on the machine in red permanent marker. So far so...

What do you get when you...

What you get is a lousy breakfast! I'll do vegetarian, gluten free, lactose free, low fat, nut free, low(er) calorie...but I simply won't do vegan. If someone wants to eat wallpaper paste it's not going to be at my Inn. They can go down the street to the local cafe and then post a bad review...

    Use for brown bananas

I freeze them and then use them in this recipe as needed. Freezing does not damage the bananas for this recipe...and then I freeze the muffins, defrost as many as I need overnight and reheat 30 seconds to 1 minute or so in microwave. Perfect! Banana Muffins (the best ever...and so easy)...

Had to pop in for some stress relief

Here's an idea that might be an option: http://www.collegehumor.com/picture/210494 My kids are grown but sometimes I wonder "Why didn't I think of this?" (just kidding!!!) Hope this gives you a laugh!

    Naming a guestroom journal

I once atayed at a B & B that had a journal in each room. The purpose was to add onto a story that was originally started by the 1st entry (presumably the owner). Each guest was encouraged to elaborate on the story which turned into a kind of mystery. It was really fun to see what people...

    Polite way to hang up?

I have a "frequently asked questions" tab on my website and I answer tons of questions there. I try to direct guests to that tab. I add to the tab whenever I get questions that need answering that are not already there. Many people don't seem to read ANYTHING on the website but for those that...

Bed And Breakfast On TV Tonight on Hotel Hell

Real or not...sadly, many or most people are hugely influenced by what they say & hear in the media. They consciously or unconsciously think that there must be at least some truth to what they see and hear. I don't think these type of programs are good for our industry. We all make so much...

Bed And Breakfast On TV Tonight on Hotel Hell

I think it will be entertaining to watch...just like the other "hotel impossible "reality series is. However targeting B & B's hits closer to home and I worry that people will begin to think that ALL or MANY B & B's are like that. I find that people think as little as possible and make unfair...
