Do any of you have major weddings on your property? All I hear are horror stories. Is it worth it?
An innkeeper friend of mine has a beautiful 9 room lodge and does weddings in the summer. This is their bread and butter. Without them, the business would not be able to sustain itself. These weddings can be anywhere from 20-300 people. Of course they have to book up the entire lodge for at least 2 nights. Every year there seems to be at least 2 real horror stories. This is not an inexpensive place, and she keeps raising the prices and adding protective statements in her contract, but it doesn't seem to eliminate the problems that occur.
At the beginning of the wedding season, she had a wedding and the groom was a member of fire/sheriff/police dept. They all got so drunk that there was vomit on carpets, neighbors complaining of noise and things destroyed...oh yeah, you can't call the cops to break it up, they were all there!
Well, now I get an e-mail about the latest wedding fiasco. Frankly, I don't know how much longer she'll be able to take it.

} "DH returned from San Fran last night around 10:30 very tired and forgot to lock the door. At around 2:00 a.m. someone walked into our apartment with a flash light....we both woke up startled and the heck frightened out of us and of course DH started yelling and screaming at the guy to "get @%&!! out.
Found out this a.m. it was the bride's brother...whom when he arrived, all of my staff nailed him as a trouble maker. So I have Mom in hysterics, Bride and her father crying and the groom mad as hell. Evidently this kid has had a big problem for about 6 months.
I am locking my door tonight and the Lodge and bringing a gun to our apartment."

Holy cow. That is my worst nightmare, that we forget to lock the door and are woken up by someone in our apartment. This story gave me chills.
You could not pay me enough money to host any kind of wedding here, luckily we don't have to though, if it's your bread and butter that's a different story.

We don't host weddings, but we do have a fair share of wedding parties and bridal guests. I have formatted a etiquette letter for wedding guests, many whom have never stayed at a B & B before. This has help us
B&B Etiquette for first time guests.
Some first-time guests may be unsure about what is expected when staying at a B&B. Staying at a B&B is a wonderful experience and great fun.

First, please enjoy yourself! Despite the following etiquette suggestions our atmosphere is very relaxed. Respectful behavior and common sense make most of these suggestions into reminders.
Read the rules, ask a few questions and you'll feel right at home.
We will do our best to help you and your guests feel comfortable and at home, both with your B&B accommodations and with the surrounding area.

Courtesy and mutual respect is the best mode of operation between the innkeeper and guest as well as between the guests themselves. The Inns check-in times range from 3 - 6 PM. If you will not be arriving within this time frame, please call ahead to make alternative arrangements.

Since our guests enjoy a quiet getaway, behave as you would like other guests to behave around you. A B&B is not an appropriate place for a noisy party, and sound may carry easily in the hallways among the bedrooms or into other guests space, so be mindful of your noise level when coming and going from the inn during resting hours in the evening and early morning. Respect other guests.

The _______________House has been individually decorated by the owners with personal mementos, family pieces, artwork, and valuable antique furniture It is all functional but please tailor your actions with this in mind.

Our Bed and Breakfast is located in a beautiful, quiet and private residential neighborhood. Consideration for our neighbors by keeping noise to a minimum, driving responsibly onto our streets, and respecting private property is vital to maintaining a great enjoyable environment for our guests

Parking is restricted to specific areas. We provide 1 parking space for each rental unit. Care should be taken to ensure more than one spot is not taken by your vehicle and others can park. Off site parking is available by advance arrangement for extra vehicles. Please provide a minimum of 24 hour advance notice as a permit is required.

The _______________ House is a smoke free establishment. Smoking is not permitted anywhere but outside. If you choose to smoke in any room of the Inn, your credit card that is on file will be charged a $300 cleaning fee. Check first if you are a smoker. Don't assume.

We are a green establishment. To lessen the impact on the environment, please help conserve energy by turning off lights and air conditioning units when they are not in use. House keeping is offered daily. If you would like to reuse your towels, indicate this by hanging them up.
Towels on the floor will be replaced.

It is recommended to carry a cell phone in the event it is necessary to contact you in the event of an emergency.

We hope you and your guests stay is most enjoyable. We will gladly accommodate you in any way possible.

By following these rules we hope to continue to add to everyone's positive and relaxing B & B experience.

Thank you for your kind attention and cooperation.

We look forward to your visit!

These are sent to the guests ahead of time. That gives them time to read and absorb it before they are in full throttle party mode. Yes, it has helped.

What they may want to start doing is hiring on a security detail for the length of the stay.

So far, we have had no major problems. I consider myself lucky. Also, we don't host these events, so that gives folks a chance to have all their bad behavior at the reception hall. We are in a small town in the sticks. We don't even have a bar that stays open past 10 PM. If I lived in a more urban setting or college town environment, I would need a different approach.

Thank you for sharing this! I think it is excellent and a good read for any potential guest. We get a lot of first-timers here and I know they are a little hesitant about what the "rules" are...this might be a good thing to have on our website if they have questions.

I've had six good sized weddings here in the two years I've been open, and a couple other small, immediate family only, weddings. Have never had problems of any consequence, although I worry a bit about things I imagine could happen. I spend a fair amount of time talking to the bridal couple before allowing a reservation so that presumably I have a good idea of what they are planning and I explain what my expectations are regarding guest etiquette, etc. If either of us feel uncomfortable about the others plans or expectations the event plan does not proceed - an outcome that has only happened once. I do require a two day reservation of my entire facility, which could include from 15 to 25 guests.
I'm having a wedding this week-end, about 120 guests, and I'm told 40 of them are staying here. That would include some who are staying in their own motor homes on the property, but I think the bride has plans to pack the house to a greater extent than I may be happy with. Usually folks contract a caterer to do their reception, but I'm doing the reception for this wedding, and also a dinner for 40 people on Friday night. Of course breakfast for 40 on two mornings is a given. I don't usually do food for these kind of numbers so I'm stressing out a little. Will start some of the prep tomorrow, actually that's today, I guess; and go into full gear all day Friday. Wish me luck!
To answer the original question, is it worth it? I'm up for a couple days of hopefully only mild stress which will be worth about $4,500; so yes, I would say it's worth it. I haven't had a bad experience doing weddings, and even enjoy some of the festivities involved. They quite often have good live music and I enjoy watching the guests dance and have a good time.

do you bring in serving help ... a couple at home moms or dads or local students? for parking, setup, serving and cleanup?

Yes, I'll have two other ladies to help with food prep. and serving and cleaning up. And, my son is coming from 5 hours away to tend bar for them (their liquor, not mine). He'll help with parking before the wedding and clean up on Sunday. The next issue is that I'm totally full Sunday night with all different people after we say Bye-bye to the wedding folks hopefully by Noon on Sunday. Have two other ladies to help get everything turned in four hours on Sunday (20 beds - 12 bathrooms). I very seldom go from one full house to another same day, and wouldn't last long if I did.

wow!

so exciting and fun!!
hope it all goes smoothly. i loved (miss) that once in a while for me pace.

Unbelievable....a week has past since I posted the original horror wedding e-mail I get another e-mail from my friend and this weekend she had another horror wedding!
"Another interesting wedding....I only have interesting weddings.
The bride and groom were young, only mid 20's and working on masters degree. They were a really sweet couple however their "friends" were an interesting lot. The only thing they were working on was destroying their liver. They began drinking hard alcohol shortly after breakfast, for all I know they never quit from the night before. During breakfast I over heard one of the "friends" tell a group of guys they were making a booze run; she needed a fifth of whiskey. I could not help myself so I looked at her with my please let this not be happening again and I am about to explode into screaming out of control Innkeeper look; she obviously mis-read my expression. With a very straight face she asked if I was jealous; if I wanted they would be happy to pick me up a fifth. "You have got to be kidding, do I look like I am jealous". I said. What I really wanted was to kick her out of the Lodge, but not before she cleaned the carnage in the bathroom from the night before. With bare hands, on her hands and knees and with a toothpick!!!
Wedding came and as usual, very loud. About 9:00 I heard some popping sound. My first thought was that someone was shooting a gun, then when the popping did not go away, DH and I realized they were shooting off fireworks; big fireworks, big illegal fireworks. Good thing it rained yesterday!
They trashed my rooms, left garbage and cigarette butts everywhere including rooms. Filled my dumpster with enough garbage that I have to call for a special pick up. Here is the hilarious part; they are the typical into saving the planet, vegetarians...bla,bla,bla.
I love my job, I love my job, I love my job.
Only one wedding left. I keep telling myself I am getting $6 grand a weekend. I am raising my fee."

Well, nobody asked, but my wedding and reception went wonderfully, everyone was delighted with everything, cleaned up after themselves (including things that actually should have been my job) and departed by 11:00 am this morning. I now have a new full house. Your friend ought to stop having weddings if they turn into such a nightmare for her. I would say there's got to be a reason she has such a high percentage of horrible experiences. Maybe she can figure out why and address the problem, dare I say it might even be something she should be doing differently.

I am raising my fee.".
Well, nobody asked, but my wedding and reception went wonderfully, everyone was delighted with everything, cleaned up after themselves (including things that actually should have been my job) and departed by 11:00 am this morning. I like your wedding experience better! May all the weddings you do be wonderful experiences.
I wonder where people got the idea that weddings should be anything other than a day of joy? Maybe booze should be banned? I guess I am among the weird because I never needed booze to have a great time.

I agree with Sunburst. Obviously, most of you know I'm an aspiring so don't have the experience of these as an owner, but I do have experience as a server/helper, and I just have not seen people so out of control at one property consistently. Hosting weddings and other small events, from my aspiring research so far, should be a nice source of extra income for the B&B. Maybe a simple review of the rules and policies is in order, maybe changing the way the rules and policies are presented to the wedding couple at the time of booking, or maybe this person is sort of turning the property over to the couple and their guests without much structure or controls? It's a real shame as it sounds like the demand is there; just need to figure out how to make it run smoothly.
