a couple of days ago we received an email ,via our website contact form, from someone named "Amber White". The email stated that she would like to pay us $50.00 to put 3 links on our 'Rooms' page.I'd have to look again to be sure, but the words,i think, she wanted to link to were, comfortable, blanket & romantic.
I have never received a spam like this before, nor have i ever heard of such a request!
I am NOT someone who responds to spam seeming emails. i am just curious if anyone has ever heard of this sort of request. "Amber" was not looking for financial info or anything she wanted to pay us!
We wondered if it's one of those things where the "links" might potentially open your website up for viruses? Don't know, but anyway....

I don't know, if I got it it was deleted. I have my virus catcher catching trojans about 3 or 4 per day right now. be careful.

never heard of this before..but sure doesn't sound good. I would not respond and delete the message.

My personal opinion is to delete this as fast as possible. All three words lend to thoughts of porn sites. Links from your site are a reflection on you. I have a legit one that I wish I did not because the site is sooooooo bad but I did it in the name of trying to help ecnomic development in that particular area.

oh, a porn issue never occurred to me...makes sense though. no i did not respond or accept the offer, never would!

I've had a few link swap requests and one prior 'paid' link request, but nothing like that.

It was likely a legitmate request to buy advertising/links (as legitimate as spam can be). You'd have to ask what pages the links would go to. (you'd control that as you or your webmaster would have to put them in ...never give anyone else control/access to your server even if they politely suggest that they can put them in for you.)
Selling links is sort of on Google's latest taboo list (even though they are the largest source of sold links on the planet) so if this link buying campaign were discovered, it could come back to bite you. Probably not worth the $50 unless it is a local buisness or a business you actually want to promote.

Amber is trying to do SEO. Link buying has been a very common thing.
I don't know Amber.

I don't know Amber either...that is why i have no intentions of accepting her offer. she did not say anything about a company or such that she is with. it just said "Amber White".

Can you view the address that sent the email? Is there a company name attached to that or is it a yahoo address or other freebie? When I'm unsure, that is one method I use...a real company will have a real email address, which leads you to a real site that you can check.

Comments: Hi,
I'd like to pay you $50 to add a couple of links on this page:
----------------------------------
* Link the word "Decorating" in the first paragraph to - http://www.getdecorating.com/design_gallery/index.cfm
* Link the word "Blankets" in "Super Soft Snuggle Blankets" on the side to - http://www.ic.arizona.edu/ic/mcbride/ws200/weavshut.htm
* Link the word "Flowers" in the same list as above to - http://www.gautier-ms.gov/business/retail.html
===================
Again, I can pay you $50 total for these ads - ideally for permanent inclusion on your site, though one year's placement is quite satisfactory. I can make an electronic payment through PayPal (just need your PayPal e-mail address), or I can pay with an old-fashioned paper check through regular mail (just need your mailing address)...
Please let me know what you think.
Again, thanks a ton!

The above is a copy/paste of the message i received in the email. the only thing i have left out is the link to the page of my website, the page she wanted the links to be from. i only left that out so as to conceal the name of my inn.
oh, i was a little incorrect in my earlier post regarding the words she wanted to link from. i said blanket, comfortable & romantic. i was wrong as you can see from the info above.

none of the links appear to be porn related but just because they look innocent enough, does not mean they are.

As Paul said...looks like she is trying to buy links to help with SEO. I still would not do it for a stranger. Not worth the $50 and who knows what it would lead to down the road. Just another example of "what not to do with doing SEO on your web site.

But can you see the email address she sent the email from? Looks like she's trying to get those other people to pay her to increase their web presence and her way of doing that is to buy links from places she has found the keywords those other folks need. So a weaver gets linked to a place that has 'super soft blankets' in the text.
Unless anyone would want to support those other businesses/pages, it doesn't look like a good business choice for the owner of the website who is being paid to add those links.
