First of all, no one was hurt. Secondly, we returned yesterday from vacation so had the calendar blocked for no guests last night.
The big storm that came across that many of you encountered hit us hard, roared at us with over 80 mph winds and took 1/2 of our 100 year old maple down out front and onto the road (big maple).
Secondly it ripped hundreds of shingles off our roof (the orig part of the house has a metal roof, the back has shingles), and threw them everywhere! I am so thankful no one was out there, they are up and down the street and it would have hurt or injured someone if they were hit by one.
The wind raged on and DH and two neighbors were out with hack saws in the dark trying to clear the road while we signaled for cars and emergency vehicles to turn around. Then after midnight a guy from the power company showed up with a chainsaw (ours needs sharpening, and couldn't cut it!).
We went out this morning to assess the damage, it is bad. Our giant hickory has a large limb hanging down ready to snap any minute. We had no power all night, and it was 102 degrees yesterday - broke all records, and was 98 into the night, it never cooled down.
The good news is whatever high winds the storm brought, it took them with, and we had no rain! So the roof was okay during the night. Our first claim on our homeowners will happen today.

Oh My JB, so sorry to hear your bad news, although thankful that no one was hurt. I guess we all need to be prepared for more of this type of weather with global climate change raging on.
Your loss and mess make me very sad.....so much hard work ahead to get things in order for your new guests. Hopefully you will have your home back in order soon.

All that and no rain! Amazing! Glad the damage wasn't worse.
We're burning up here. Haven't seen a drop a rain in weeks and predicted 103 degrees again today. One of our county's five rivers is almost dry, mostly due to farmers pumping water out for irrigation, and no rain to replace it.
Burn ban means no fireworks allowed for 4th of July. Kids are crying. Fireworks vendors are crying harder!
Not enough tears to end the burn ban, though.

I thought about you this morning. I am glad you are all ok, but such a shame.
We had really bad winds, but very little rain. No real damage on our property, but we are without power. Our generator is allowing me to use the computer :)
I was taking my cat to the Vet at 7 am!! surveying all the wind damage around town. Some major old trees down. I was just putting together a booklet about our historic trees yesterday. Guess I remove at least one of them now.

AEP estimates over half of its customers are without power still. Ours came back on at 2am, we are a few blocks from the hospital, so typically it is not off long.
The good news, guess what, in every emergency here DH has to race out and deal with it due to his job with the county, the 9-11 system being paramount, public safety, etc. But this time he was here to deal with US and OUR FAMILY and emergency. They don't have his new cell phone # and our phones were down, or I am SURE they would have called. The only other guy in I.T. who could assist lives an hour away...and doesn't really have a clue (I bet he wished he paid attention better when DH was showing him stuff).

Glad you are OK! and that the damage wasn't worce! if any of those branches had hit the house or blown in to a a car or window.

Wow. Glad all is ok!! We got the whole shebang here. The lightening was crazy! We were outside and my back was turned to the trees and it flashed then cracked in my ear. My family grew really quiet as I screamed. It apparently struck within several yards of us. Glad I didn't see it. Haven't had a chance to see what damage was done around us. Storms like this freak me out.

Wow, JB - so glad no one was hurt. Our town seemed to be in a little bubble, no power outage, no major damage but all around the county there are big problems. 1/2 of the people don't have power still. It seems to have been much much worse to the east and south.
It's no fun to deal with this stuff.

Thank goodness that as bad as it was and is, that it was not worse. It was YOUR turn to have the stalwart by your side. Really happy about that.
We had the high winds and got the rain you did not. It was torrential! No radio stations this morning, no newspaper, no local TV, our power blinked on and off for about 30 minutes total but stayed on. I think most of the fire depts were called out last night and would bet it was for trees in the roads.
My roof is still on the waiting list, not even in line yet but I was lucky, It must have been coming from a different direction than usual because there was very little water in the Harris. I am happy you had no rain - the water damage is often worse than the roof problem. ((((HUGS to you and yours)))) May you be blessed with quick repairs.
Tell DH to STAY OFF THE ROOF!!! We do not need him to take a roll.....

First, VERY happy to hear all of you are safe and sound and no one was hurt! So sorry for the damage especially the trees as they can't be easily replaced.
Hot, Hot, Hot here too, very little rain. Every day I see a 30% rain chance 4-5 days ahead, then mysteriously the next day it has moved out to another 4-5 days.

Having never had any claims before, I have been calling the local agent (even tho the phone # on the policy is not working, I think it is a cell phone of all things) and the machine in the office picks up and states office hours are between 9am and 4pm and then there is no way to leave a message. As you can see it is now nearly 11am. Did they skip town? What the heck!
I called the HQ for this insurer and there was a message that said to leave a message for the person you are calling. No other option, whatsoever. They take my money every year and I cannot reach anyone now.
So, are we going to learn a lesson in some crappy insurance company coverage now? One who never answers their phone? I will report back if so. This agent is only a mile away, I might have to drive down there.

I was on safety watch so I took some images, cutting the big branch in the hickory tree.

Even with debris everywhere I had to get this shot:

It shows hope and beauty in the midst of chaos and destruction. That is a good thing! Thank you.
Just had a call that it looks as if some shingles were blown off the 1778 log house.

Yeah pretty messed up all over here. Trees trees trees the culprits in most cases. Well guess what the insurance agent just called, if I call him EYORE I would be assigning too much enthusiasm. He said he submitted our claim and someone will be coming out. I asked "Don't you come out?" his reply in a slow drawl was "I am just the maggot that submits the paperwork."
Very helpful, indeed.
People are calling now and we are turning them away, as so many don't have power. One guy just called and said "My wife is country, but not THAT country. Can we pay to come over and take a shower?" DH is adamant that we won't be accerting any guests as another severe storm is on the way. We can barely cool the upstairs as it is now, over 100 degrees and heat index.

I think you have legitimate excuse as to not taking guests. what if the next storm takes out your power? Then you would have to deal with that with strangers in your house. Y ou already have more than enough on your plates. Let them go to a hotel:

So sorry you had such destruction, but glad everyone is safe. What a beautiful huge hickory tree! We've been through some major wind storms here and it's definitely a challenge. Around here as I'm sure it's the same around there, it's the locals who all get out their chain saws to clear the roads.
I hope the roof gets fixed before any rain!

Yeah we aren't taking any guests. We had it blocked off - long story...my sister is here with fam from Ireland but they went to OBX. without even swinging by, I have not even seen her yet. There's the phone again...I changed the message to that effect. There are still thousands without power. We are expecting another major storm tonight, DH has been out with chain saw in 104 degree heat all day. One town near us has opened up fire hydrants to allow people to get water. There is a lot going on, DH was adamant, and he would have had said take them all!
