I keep getting hit by spammers trying to leave comments on the two websites I maintain.
I cannot find where people are getting access to leave comments or how to disable ALL comments. All I can find is how to review comments before they are published.
What am I missing?

Settings, Discussion Settings, Comment settings.
Or add this plugin... https://wordpress.org/plugins/disable-comments/

I might need the plug in. There is nothing under comment settings to disable comments. I can moderate them, but I can't stop them outright. Thanks!

.
Allow people to post comments on new articles - NO
Users must be registered and logged in to comment - YES

Also, if you don't use the Akismet anti-spam plug-in, I highly recommend it.
Especially the "silently discard the worst and most pervasive spam so I never see it" setting.

The site I'm getting the most spam on has akismet installed! I'll go check those settings tomorrow.

Try this:
Login to wp-admin. Go to Settings » Discussion from the left sidebar of your WordPress admin panel. On this page, you need to uncheck the option that says “Allow people to post comments on new articles” and then click on the Save Changes button to store your settings. This will disable comments on all your future posts.
Let me know how you go.

BTW, I was never able to do this on my own. I installed a plugin that totally messed up the website and I had to get the webhost to reset the site to a previous version. They also did some coding to stop the comments. So far, so good.
