It's interesting to see the comments people are making about how did the guy get into the rooms in the first place. It seems kind of easy to me. I would think if you just got off the elevator in any hallway once the cleaning started it's nothing to say you've decided to stay. Housekeeping doesn't care. They wouldn't stop you. These folks who think housekeeping is security are pretty wrong.
Then you tell the front desk you need another keycard. Or, the previous guest left the other one behind and Bob's yer uncle.
It's brilliant. And now he has free lodging again!

wow. Come to think of it, at a lot of hotels I've been told no need to stop at the desk when leaving. No wonder guests at the b&b would just leave. It never occurred to me that might be why.

Yes. There is that attitude that it's 'just a hotel' and we find that the guests have gone and the keys are in the room and we didn't even know they'd checked-out.

Most hotels change the door code after check out, preventing someone from coming back if they didn't turn the card in. But if the guy gets in before the code is changed - wala!
Many guests ask us over breakfast if there is anything they need to do at check-out... I do say that we like to say goodbye and get their key, but otherwise nothing. But I have had others that slip out without even a quick wave, then I pray the key was left in the room.

when I worked in large hotels housekeeping found 2 tramps who had gotten in and I found one helping himself to the beer in the roof top function suite! I spotted the same guy nipping through reception and up the stairs and had to call the duty manager to get some burly staff members to escort him out again.
Another hotel where DH worked found one helping himself out of the staff fridge in the staff accommodation.
