Question for you veterans. What guidelines do you use for cookies/treats?
Generally we make enough cookies for all guests in the house to have two each afternoon. If they are gone early in the evening we will make some extra, but that is usually enough, there are usually 2-3 left over in the morning. Today I checked in three single ladies staying for the weekend. They camped themselves in the dining room and have been drinking tea for the past two hours...when they arrived there were two dozen cookies, now there are 4 left which means they ate FIVE each because no one else is in the house!
I am going to make more for the other TWELVE guests in the house but I am going to try to avoid putting them out until after the "ladies" leave. I was just curious what kinds of quantities have been normal for you all?

Lots! But I have a dh and twin boys (and me) who all love cookies, too!
Just checked in two people and made 19 cookies (because that's how many were left in the freezer container). Just got a last minute rez for two more people... but don't plan on making more.
=)

I do not do evening treats -cookies etc. I have baskets with bananas/apples. pkgs of mini-cookies and snack crackers in each room for attacks of munchies.
However, this reminds me of the woman I used to work with. "I spent all dy making 60 cookies and my son and his friend ate all of them! I don't bother making cookies any more. I just buy them."
My question to her was why bother baking for just 5 dozen cookies? If it only made 5 dozen, I either doubled or tripled the recipe. And if my kids did not go through the cookies like a buzz saw, I would wonder what was wrong with them.
YOU know you had allotted 2 cookies per guest. The "ladies" did not get the script so they did not know that nor do they know how many guests you have.. You put them out, they were good cookies, so they ate them.

The two cookies per person is just a guideline we use when making the first batch of the day, I like to make them as we need them so they are always fresh. I was just curious if others made the same amount or more.
I honestly don't mind making them, especially when it's obvious that people are enjoying them. I guess I was just surprised with this group...they are here celebrating one's 60th b-day, and I guess I made the "ass-umption" that they'd have ladylike manners!

12 guests tonight - I put out 8 cookies and chances are will bring 4 back in. But no ladies sitting having tea here, so I can see where they would go quicker with them.
teeth_smile.gif

We always bring in what is left, adn there is always something left. One couple checked in and zipped out. Two other rooms might not be here til really late. One guest brought an award winning cheesecake from a local eatery in a neighboring town (so prob won't eat the cookies I have out). So one by one they get marked off and might have 2 or 3 people eat one,

Tweren't meant as a pull in the reins. It just tickled a memory.
It truly means they were talking and having a good time and the cookies were there..... Have you ever sat reading a book with a bag of cookies next to you and suddnly found it to be an empty bag?

Ok, I just realized that what's bugging me isn't the eating of the cookies, but the fact that they are sitting RIGHT over the cookie jar. I just checked in two other couples and they tried to get a cup of tea and couldn't get around the group. So I invited the ladies to bring their tea into the living room to the more comfy chairs...they flat out ignored me and went back to their conversation!
The two couples just went out for dinner, so hopefully if the ladies ever move out I can refill the hot water and put some fresh cookies out...going to be a long weekend!

i think they assumed they could eat as many as they wanted. they don't know how many guests you have nor how many cookies are allotted per person.
this just happened to someone else on the forum
i have had this happen sometimes ... worst when it's a pie. i pre-slice and leave it in the pan so they see how many slices. and i put out a plate and fork per guest. so, BIG smile on face i say 'one slice each' because sometimes the early guests will have two. and then there is not enough pie. my friend says, 'you actually tell the guests just one slice a piece?' well, yes i have to.

Innsiderinfo - this is a case where it is stressing YOU but the other guests probably don't even care. Deep breath. How many guests in a row now? I bet quite a few. I am the same way. One room checked in on a converence call and I said I would wait and he "motioned" to go ahead. Motioned...like I am a dog doing a trick. ha ha WOOF!

You are right! One more week of this LONG month...I am trying to get over it. All others are checked in now, ladies still chatting happily away...kitchen door is locked and I am going out to dinner, cookies be darned!

With that number of guests I would have put out around 18 cookies/brownies. Many guests don't touch them at all. Once they are gone, they are gone. I put them out around 4 PM. If you think you can keep those ladies from scarfing more cookies down, then make more. The problem is that other guests come in and think, 'That's it? She only made 4 cookies?'
Should you notice that happening again, you could always take the tray away by saying, 'Oh my, let me refill that,' and then disappear.

See the other post about 'Oh my, let me refill that, I didn't realize it was EMPTY.'
Is there a way to arrange the seating so it's not right where the tea things are? The other thing is to take it as a compliment. They are comfortable, relaxed and oblivious. You see these people everywhere. Spread out, taking up all the space and most other people are too polite to budge them.
Not me, however. If I saw tea and cookies and someone was blocking my path and it seemed they weren't going to budge, I'd barge right in. 'Please excuse me, I think I'll have some of this before it's all gone.' I'm well known in certain circles for being the first one in a buffet line.

If I have one room only booked in I put 3 cookies on a plate in their room..

Sometimes I do that, too... only I'd do four (2 each) so no one's fighting over the last cookie.

Me, too. Never an odd number for 2 guests.
