I also set up for two and leave everything for single travelers except the guest robe. I would remove the extra robe before check-in when the room is "iced". There's something about a an extra robe that makes me feel lonely.... ;-)
4 bath towels, 2 hand towels, a face cloth for makeup, 2 wash cloths, and a bath mat. 2 glasses for the bathroom. 4 pillows on the bed, and 2 spares. Since we do turndown, there would be the appropriate number of chocolates and cold water for the occupancy whether it was one, two, or three.
For 3 in a room, we add the appropriate extras. It's easier to have everything there than for the guest to have ask you for something. Also as a guest for me, there is nothing worse than not having enough towels or pillows for the rates at most B&Bs.
I really don't understand the reasoning in removing items as you are checking in the guest. To me, it makes the innkeeper appear cheap or something..

Appear? ha ha sorry this is a funny thread. Someone is reading it and getting red in the face right now, oops! Come on, let's treat people like humans not numbers.

I agree....I guess I was trying to be kind to the innkeeper who might be doing this. It would take me more effort to remove everything from the room and bath than to just leave it be. I can't imagine doing it with the guest standing right there.

i remove the extra bathrobe because they took so long to wash, i'd prefer that the one guest just use the one ... was surprised when a single would use both.
as a single myself, i appreciate when someone lets me sit at a nice table even though i'm just one, and when they put one lovely mug or whatever snack in my room, just for me. especially valentines day, christmas, oh heck, a lot of the time, i feel especially sad being widowed and i actually do feel less lonely if i'm not looking at sets of everything and tables for two everywhere i go. never paid much attention to bathroom glasses but wouldn't be offended if they pulled out some of the extra towels for my single stay. i like having lots of towels, but i don't need a pile of them.
as an innkeeper, i pulled all the towels from a room when a guest checked out whether they looked like they'd been used or not, just in case .......

I stayed on my own at a golf resort recently for one night and it really didn't bother me that there were two robes in the closet or plenty of towels or two wine glasses. I think this is absurd. When we have a single guest if anything they get MORE goodies to make them feel welcome! Bud vase of flowers next to the bed AND in the bathroom.

ahhhhhhhh...but isn't that one of the differences of staying at a b&b rather than a resort or hotel? We give the personalized service. At that resort, your concierge didn't escort you to your room either.

I think it's just another "layer" of attention to detail.

Actually, no not just the conceirge, I had valet, the check clerk, and the concierge who was the GM all take care of it.
In the room were a bowl of fresh blackberries and orchid plants, a welcome letter from the owner. Two HD tvs, two bathrooms, electric shades, it is a LEED property, personal settings for all lighting (such as check in, reading, napping), sanseo coffee machine, chocolates, robes, wine glasses, all repurposed wood from other structures in the mountains, and more. Met the owner the next day (the orig owner is now deceased and was a French Billionaire). Turn down had a small bowl of chocolates next to the bed and a Sleep Tight note on the bed from the staff. http://www.primland.com/

All of which definitely explains the price.

I agree that the extra robe makes me feel a bit lonely when I'm traveling by myself. Probably a quirk of mine......
I also pulled all the towels from the bath after every check out....You just don't know what's really been used or just looks like it hasn't been used. The two glasses in the bathroom are nice if a singleton wants to use it for their toothbrush. Sometimes people don't trust toothbrush holders even if they look spic 'n span. :-(
