I am redoing a site for a friend. The previous web guy was a jerk and created so many crappy pages. I have combined information from them into one page. I don't want to destroy her history. I guess I need to do a 301 redirect???? SWIRT...any directions on this?? THanks

Yes you need 301 redirects. Just keep in mind that for every page you collapse into another, removes one hook from the water (even if you 301 it) So do so only when absolutely necessary. Better idea, if you can, is to re-purpose the page to something else. and 301 to that page, even if the topic is unrelated to what the page was originally.

Catlady & Swirt, can you translate that into English for someone who needs to rely on a designer and is about to embark on a new website? What's the concern about abandoning pages? Can you explain? Thanks!

Swirt can do a better job than I on this...but it has to do with the history of your site. Here's a link I think explains it pretty well:

InnBloom, there are largely two concerns when replacing an old site with a new site.
1) The first is that some of the many factors that search engines take into account relate to the history of the page. History includes things like the age of the page, and the age of the links coming into that page and the pagerank that has been flowing to and through that page as a result of the incoming and outgoing links for that page. This age can not be faked or purchased. It is earned by the passage of time.
2) The other is the traffic that currently comes to that page as a result of its ability to show up in searches.
Lets say you have an old page , oldpage.htm and then in your new site that page no longer exists and was replaced by newpage.htm then there is potential for the loss of all the earned history and links to be lost since the old page is being removed. Once you lose it, the only way to earn that back is to let an equivalent amount of time pass. That oldpage may have contributed a fair amount of traffic to the site.but now much of that will be gone
That is unless at the time of the replacement, someone takes the time to redirect any request for oldpage.htm to newpage.htm. That effectively transports anyone that followed a link to oldpage.htm to newpage.htm without them even realizing there was a change. It also tells the search engines, "The role of oldpage.htm is now being played by newpage.htm, please attribute all the history earned by oldpage to newpage." The 301 part just indicates that it is a permanent change.
The other part Catlady was asking was if you have 5 crappy old pages, and you remake them as 1 good page, should you redirect them. The answer is yes you should, BUT by switching from 5 old fishing hooks in the water, to 1 new fishing hook, you have reduced the number of hooks in the water and lost the history of 4 of the pages. (you can't accumulate history by giving the 5 histories to one page) So my suggestion is to redirect the other 4 older pages to other newer pages if possible. Otherwise the 4 older page histories get wasted.

Thanks For the clarification. So what I have decided to do, is keep the old pages/ same filenames but of course update them with the new look. The only place they will be found is via the sitemap. So they are still with the site and exist and if someone / bots etc search for them..they are still there but just not as visible to a human. Is that ok?

That is ok. Though if you have already reproduced the info on other more visible pages, just repurpose these old pages into new pages with different content and not let them be buried and only accessible by sitemap.
