How do you protect yourself from guests downloading the copyrighted content while using your internet?

April, you have 3 choices. Legally, since other people are using your internet, you may qualify under the ISP rule. But you can also do two other things... one is that you can install a VPN for the router so everything comes through an anonymous central and therefore no one can see your traffic. The other is that you can block ports or use a DNS that blocks certain sites. But honestly, there is no 100%... I can easily get through that DNS for example, if I want to go somewhere it has blocked.

What is the issue? Just go with the flow and don't worry about it. Waste of your time. Where there is a will there is a way.
What would your guests be downloading anyway that is copyright protected?
Why do you let them use it for anything more than sending email or printing a boarding pass. I would not let a guest use my computer. These days those that need computers usually travel with their own, or tablet or use their smartphone.

Do you have a business account with your internet provider? If you do, don't worry about it.
It happened to me right after we got our high speed internet just a year ago. I got scary sounding e-mail from one of the big movie industry companies as well as our internet provider. Because we have a business which is lodging, they don't hold you responsible. Phew!

Not her computer, her WIFI.

There is no way, they can do whatever they want on their own devices, this isn't china.
(I say that as people told me last week how they are way out of the tech loop as they lived for 3 years in China and there is NO SOCIAL MEDIA.)

There is nothing you can do. They are free to do what they want with their own devices. I do suggest you make sure you have a password on your wifi to prevent unauthorized access, though.

I am much more worried about guests who would access child porn or "meet up" with underage children on your wifi or using your "office center" computer. I have read cases where they key in on the IP address, seize computers, etc.
So if a guest does this and leaves, how does the owner deal with this when the authorities come knocking?

way off my radar. I guess I'd say, it must have been a guest.

Make sure it's a commercial account and you won't be responsible. You can't control other's actions. Also, I would not have any common computer for them to use. Everyone has a smart device and nobody has asked to print up boarding passes in at least a year. A common computer just isn't necessary anymore in most cases.

common computer - true. just thinking of the "office center" some places provide. I was toying with having a multi-function printer available, but no fax!
The place I am now considering gets very poor cell reception, so folks may have no laptop and no smartphone internet or calling ability. Some cell service automatically seek out wifi like Republic wireless...
I imagine explaining to a few people how to get their smartphone to talk to our wifi for calls or internet...

We are cell phone challenged here. If you are able to provide good wifi, it solves most problems. We have a guest line that uses a magic jack and guests can call unlimited to the U.S. & Canada. Otherwise, there's skype, FB messaging, texting etc that keeps them in touch. They're mostly concerned about keeping in contact with kids.
