Last night we were having dinner and the table behind us had 2 small kids. The restaurant owner also has a little kid so he has provided a large basket of toys and books for kids to use while they're dining. These kids had the whole side of the restaurant to spread out and they were quite happy with the toys.
The moms were chatting with the waitress who told them she's a PT nursery school teacher and does the before & after school programs at the elem school in town. Moms were obviously impressed and asked if she ever does babysitting? Waitress said at present she has x hours open during the day, will have different hours in the summer.
Moms were interested in her babysitting for them. (Kids were around 5-7 years old.) They're talking rates and asking for phone number of waitress when one of the mothers says, 'I assume the school did a background check on you before you were hired. Who can I call to get that information?'
Really? That's the reality now? You do a background check on a babysitter? Or you call their employer and ask for the results of the background check?
The waitress was telling them they could call the school to get a reference but the mother kept correcting her saying, 'No, your background check. The criminal check the school does, who do I call to get that information?' The waitress ended up saying she didn't know who would have the results, she presumed they could call the town offices and ask there.

Surely if they found anything she wouldn't have been employed by the school so its all moot isn't it? Thing is i bet it is less about her being a pervet and more about petty theft.

Wow. I assume that a criminal check was done when I got a job teaching and they simply called the police to check. But an individual doesn't have that right. In Canada giving out such information would be a violation of my privacy rights. We can't even do random drug testing in Canada. Why does everyone expect that everyone else is so evil?
Better yet, did she ask for the same background check on the employer? That they paid their taxes, etc?

We have a regular customer who comes and is a magician at kids parties he has to have a CRB check for that and he always tells this to the parents as many have never even considered things like that. What we do here is they give you a dated certificate that you have passed the screen you can show if you need to and take with you. If you work with kids you update it every year. Its a sad fact that people are no longer friends with their neighbours for example I would baby sit for all my neighbours kids and even slept in to help with one neighbours mother (who was elderly and lived with them) while she had to be away. It is a sad fact few people know for example older teenagers who would be happy to do it.

She told them she had a certificate of some sort, but that wasn't good enough. If she is working in a school they have her fingerprints on file and have done a background check, maybe. I think a lot of the schools don't have the time or the money to complete the check so they just take your fingerprints and figure anyone who will be rejected by a check won't bother to apply.

The truly sad fact is you have no idea WHO is the one we used to refer to as "the funny uncle". With all the online porn and other crap available and no one daring to say "NO, such behavior is not tolerated or acceptable", it could be anyone from age 6 up. They just convicted an 80 year old ex-cop who had been diddling young boys for years. It came to light when one of the boys, now a grown man, was visiting in the area and saw his abuser with some young boys and realized he could not remain silent. He wrote a letter to the parents of the boys telling them what had happened to him and that if they chose to go to thepolice with it, here is my phone number. There is so much molestation in the news these days, it is no wonder parents want a background check.
and there is no way those mothers could call the school district to get any info about a background check. That info IS private and protected. To get it, they would have to hire a background check to be done - and do a background check on everyone they consider hiring, not just one candidate.

My son's girlfriend is trying to get a local teaching job, in the interim she is applying at several day cares and tudoring offices.. The school board is conducting their own background check but each of the other places she has applied wants her to pay for her own background check, that adds up if you are applying at multiple places.

yes ... this is the new reality. although not so new to me ... i applied for a teacher aide job some 20 years ago and there was a background check at that time.
i work in a church. before hiring me, they did a CORI check.
a CORI check was done on the babysitter who provides childcare during worship service, on the music director and the new janitor/custodian. anyone who wants to volunteer to help with the senior citizen brunch must have a CORI check done.Criminal Offender Record Information
i am in massachusetts, so this is a link just to my state's info about CORI
i have applied for jobs in nursing homes and schools, CORI check required.
this CORI will only show if someone has been arrested, accused or convicted of a crime. if someone has been doing bad things but hasn't been caught, then it's no help ... but at least it shows if someone has got some kind of history in the legal system. it's just one tool to use in the hiring process. every so often, on the news, we will hear about a school bus driver or coach whose background was not even checked ... and who has a history of offenses. sad but true.

The only thing with the uK system is it only shows convictions as there was a case about 4 years ago chap had been had in by the police several times but never convicted killed two little girls and had a job as a school janitor which is how he lured them.

The reality is that we are now more aware of the terrible things people do to children. They've always happened, we were just blissfully ignorant of it.
Our daughter works for a children's advocacy center in conjunction with Child Protective Services. From the horror stories we hear, believe me you want the background check.

First of all the school district has to follow privacy laws.....they can not give out that information to anyone who calls or visits asking for it.....
What the moms can do is ask the district..........if a background check was done .......if so.....and she is employed by the district.........done deal
