"Advertise an illegal rental in New York City, and get fined up to $7,500. That’s the gist of a new law Governor Andrew Cuomo signed Friday, which targets those short-term rentals (apartments in multiunit residences leased for less than 30 days) that are technically illegal but still very often listed on Airbnb and other home-sharing sites. People are allowed to list spaces for rent for less than 30 days if they’re also living/staying in the apartment during that period."

Yes, and AirBnB is trying to sue. But it is their OWN damn fault. They were told about the problems and instead hid the data, lost in court, faked the data and go caught and now are taking the move FINALLY to try to cut out those with multiple listings. But only NOW. But only in NY and SF. They are still doing it illegally all over the place.
You know, if on Craigslist people were advertising hit men, everyone would want to shut down craigslist, because of all the illegal activity... but no one wants to shut down AirBnB because of all their illegal activity.
This will likely be the biggest hit to their valuation and they could have stopped it by doing it right the first time and not pushing that envelope, now all the cities and states know what they can do to get back their taxes and get apartment rents back in order.

air also fights back because in my area I'm hearing ads on the radio 'helping middle class families earn extra income by partnering with air bnb' and today there are flyers from them in the mail.

Here is another good reason not to use AirBNB... 12 houses were vandalized after having been rented through AirBNB
