Found an email in the spam folder this morning requesting 3 rooms for an assortment of guests saying they had been here before. It didn't look spammy to me, but who can tell why the spam filter thought it was. Replied back saying it would be better if they booked online so they could choose their own rooms. Spammers usually give up at that point, right?
Came back from dinner and found a booking for 3 rooms for 3 nights. At that point, none of the names were familiar so I decided to do some detective work thinking they may have been here last year. Found them immediately by the street and town. Real guests. Coming all the way from Italy for a second year. Sweet!

excellent! and 3 rooms for 3 nites!!
and good reminder for everyone to check before disregarding.
once in a while guests would send an email asking for a reservation -- usually foreign guests -- and apparently using an email from me from a year ago or more. we had guests who were referred by walkins from denmark i believe. couldn't find our website but emailed me using an address given them by friends. i almost ignored the initial email because it had all the red flags ... broken english, requests that didn't make sense. but something about the email caused me to pursue it a bit and they came and stayed and loved it.

Great! Spammers have made life sooo hard for the little guy. I am glad you were smart enough to check it out.

A tip off would have been if they were trying to sell you viagra from Nigeria.

Good for you.....I am glad they were real.
I get the spamy ones on a daily basis...3 newly wed couples from blah blah blah are coming to spend their honeymoon in our area...do they even know where the heck we are ??????
i just delete them.
However, they used to get people by sending checks which bounce after they got a cancellation refund. Now they are giving credit card numbers. Wonder how they pull that one off ??

The credit cards are stolen. They hope to swindle you before the card is found to be stolen. It's the same sort of scam where you have to refund the money, but in cash or check to them. Then the card fails and the money is taken back and you lose all around.
