I would never provide T A or any other organization all that information. Especially not a Credit Card, DL or Passport. There must be a better way to verify you are the owner of the business.
I agree with JB something just ain't right!

I think this is a hacker K. They would not ask for ythis stuff, passports and bank account info! Don't do it!

I went to our business page and got the same message, but at the bottom is this:

You can tell them from ALL OF US we would NEVER EVER give that information to them, on either count, credit card - are they kidding? Passport Number?

Hey, K, if you're going to contact them tell them we all want that kind of proof before a guest can post a comment!

Oh, it was real. I was going in to respond to an old review that had my bed sizes wrong (when it came in I did not notice or was too distracted to respond) and this crap came up. I replied to the e-mail with my own answer and got a This address does not accept e-mails. Took me a good half hour of searching to get an e-mail address to possibly send a reply to. This is what I replied:
Dear Trip Advisor,
You have now managed to make it impossible for me to respond to a review. ALL the things you require to allow me to post a response are none of your business. You have no reason to have my credit card number so someone can hack it – I am not making a purchase AND YOU have no way of knowing if that is actually MY credit card (I could have lifted it!. My property taxes, utilities bills, pay stub (sorry, most innkeepers I know do not get a pay check),bill of sale? Get your nose out of MY business and spend more time verifying that the people posting reviews actually patronized the facility they are reviewing. Do people posting a review have to provide all this verification?
I have registered my property to keep anyone else from doing so. You have been e-mailing me at this address since at least 1997 so you should be in possession of my e-mail address and ip address as verification. If I tried to post a review from here you would be quick to tell me you know me.
Gee, I wonder why B & B owners have such a love/hate relationship with your company!

It's real. I used my utility bill. No way they are getting my cc info when they have been hacked once already.
I wish they took this trouble to ensure the people posting the reviews were who they claim to be....
Riki

I am sorry you used your utility bill. They can get SOOOOO much info from that. I now have an update. Where are those darn fanfare trumpets when you need them?

Update on the update, Went in per the e-mail. Ahem - shall we say round and round I go? Not wasting another minute on this. The review in question said the Gillum Room had the obly bed larger than a twin when at the time it was the only larger than a FULL. I have never had a twin!!!

You can say whatever, why would they need to care? The ball in in their camp, now. Next bad review, you will have no way but to register if you want to defend yourself.
They do not need us. They can live without our inputs.
This has become a big cash machine. They only care for people to place bookings through their buttons on Expedia, Booking,... Opinions are just an excuse to get some free content.
This is a little like the chicken factories. They only care about selling chickens. They do not care about the chickens' well being. We are their chickens, their raw material.
Enjoy!

It is in Room Tips - that is why I missed it in the first place, the review is good except for that room tip. Oh well. - if they read (snicker) my web site, they will see no mention of the word twin. The only twin in this house are our twin daughters when they visit.

Credit card numbers are easy. Just get a disposible gift card and use that.

You are totally correct. And the joke is that they want us to PAY them so they can screw us both ways.

Reminds me of the nice review we had and at the end the guests commented that we had this super early check out time that put a damper on their enjoyment. 11am is super early? Go figure. What made me mad about it was that they checked out then continued to dawdle around for over an hour and chat to me when I had stuff to do! So it was a blade in my spine at that point when I read it. I was like Excuse me? You took an extra hour out of me then complained about it?
I told guests this past week of the dentist who said "verbally" not in a review, to other guests that the innkeepers make you get up for breakfast at some gawd-awful time. Yeah 9am. These were guests who were pacing the floor by 8am, so we had an early breakfast, and I told them this story. I guess when your dental office opens at 9 or 10am, you don't have to get up too early. Him, and his professional strength mouthwash!
(It was just funny, I knew where he was in the building by the minty freshness in the air!)

He was awright of course, he played his mandolin on the porch. Just funny people's perspectives...

After a second e-mail to them about going round and rond, I got a reply that said the first time you log in..... I usually do not log out because I forget passwords. So I logged out and back in and DID actually get in after some effort at decifering just where I was supposed to go for this. Surprise! The verification date was today. I did a verify (when it was a check this box) many years ago - at least I thought I did.....

K, I am sure you verified your account many years ago. So did I, I even had purchased the business listing (when they started it at a discount) but no longer.
Got the same. I sent an email as well, and stated that I have been a verified business owner for several years now. Indicated that they did not find any issue verifing who I was when I paid for a business listing last year.
I also stated they should be doing this before allowing people to write reviews and verify they have stayed at the property they are reviewing instead of making it impossible for a business owner to protect their business reputation by requiring personal data.
Will see what response I receive.
TA - Thorn in my _ _ _!

Why not bring this up on PAII as well? It is certainly something Jay could approach them on. (I can't, not a member.)

I did it on the PAII Forum.
Update on PAII Forum. I was told this had been discussed before - have no idea wht was said then. BUT the kicker for me was a very large inn owner saw nothing wrong with it! He actually thought it was great that they did such a vetting to ensure a "fake" owner did not destroy his reputation with a fake management response. How could that be done since ID & password are needed to get into the inn's account - reviewers just set up and account and post.
I am afraid I lit into him. Once that info is given it is there for anyone with eyes or the ability to hack. I have no idea who (forgot to add where) are their employees. I am so sick of businesses following like sheep when a vendor decides they want something. Look how many got the Diamond listing when BandB upped the ante - what is to stop T A from deciding you pay to be listed, period. IF they have your cc# it is a slam, bam, thank you ma'am.
I cannot believe how people have gotten into the if it is asked for we give it because we have to mode. NO! You do NOT have to give up your info. I did not give up the info and they decided to verity. I do not care if I never wrote another management response, I was not caving.
