Smokers.
2 of the rooms had smokers. One of them brought all the filthy butts into the room and threw them in the trash.
Luckily it's warm today so I have the windows open.
But. I am looking at TWELVE loads of laundry for 3 rooms. What a pain.

Ugh! How disgusting is that? I have to say that we are at the point where we would rather go empty than to have smokers stay. Even though they can not smoke on the property, the stench they bring with them is not worth the work it takes to clean up all the fabrics in the room.
Another group that I wish would stay in a hotel are the athletes that are achy and decide to use some product like Tiger Balm which permeates all the linens and requires that the bed get stripped to the basics and all fabrics in the vicinity get laundered. It is so much work. Sigh.

Yes. We don't have super powers for getting the stink out other than soap and water. And it's always the long wash.
It's going to take me until tomorrow to finish the room with two beds. The mattress pads on those beds only fit those beds so they have to be washed and dried before the beds go back together.
I need to take a breath. Relax. No one checking in today so I have time.
The other room used an intensely strong hair product so more open windows. That room is getting a new bed this week so at least I have time to wash everything to get the hair stuff out.

And not too put to fine a point on it - my clothes reek from handling all the bedding. Ugh.

I have had people bring in the butts too. How in the world do you curb that?

I have tried the covered ashtrays and yet they will still bring them in. The tall stand style are so dang expensive but would it break their habit?

Long walk today with Gomez. I was telling him about the 'other' innkeeper group with the guy who insists I really hate smokers.
The guest asked Gomez where she should smoke and said she wouldn't litter. He assumed she was going to leave the butts in the car. Not her car. I bet she wasn't allowed to smoke in that car at all.
He now wants to get one of those tall butt containers and chain it to the lamp post. I've voted no on that one. Even the motels don't have something that tacky.
Just flick the stupid butt on the lawn already. There's an acre out there, I'll never see it. Just don't drop it in my flower pots or in the garden!

Better this weekend. Guests shown where to smoke and where to throw butts so they're not brought in the house.
Luckily they were in the room that needed the new mattress cover so everything was getting washed anyway.

The guy in the other group seems to be a hater in general... witness his rather vehement unecessary attacks on you. Ignore him. Any way, we have a bench in one of our gardens with a rustic side table on which sits an ashtray (which I hate to empty, since like you it can trigger my extreme chemical sensitivities and send me spiraling into a coughing near wheezing fit and subsequent headache). Anyone that I sense the scent to be a smoker gets a friendly reminder at check-in about the lovely garden smoking spot far and away on our acre of land. Also, noted in all of our rooms along with state law distance from house and porches. Still, on a summer night, the stench drifts up to our treehouse third floor open windows and down they must go.

I bring out the worst in some people, sorry to say. Not sure what it was with him, but there you go.
I'm still drafting my sign for the check in desk. Have to see what I said in the room info book.

what's the other group?
I hate seeing butts in flower pots and on the ground. :( I did buy two things - top for butts, inside for trash. It was self defense. If I didn't do that, trash would be all over the parking lot. I had to empty the one in the lot (huge carpenter size bags) every other day or it would be overflowing. MORE if people decided to clean out their cars into it. The other was just off the front door porch ... surprisingly every three days - I think that was some car trash, too.

It's a Facebook group. So the 'fun' part is I already know where I'm not welcome to stay. ;-)

Or where you would not want to stay!

Why would someone hate on you for objecting to cigarette smoke and all that smoking involves, like cigarette butt disposal? I am guessing that person is a smoker.

I'm guessing he's a smoker.
Someone else suggested I find another occupation if I couldn't be hospitable.

woah .... I guess I can be glad I'm not on that forum. But I wish I was so I could jump in and defend you. grrrrrrrr

We have the smoking station outside in the parking area and it did stop butts on ground and from being brought in. Only problem was the stupid guy who shoved his empty packs in there and started a little fire so I saw smoke billowing out the top. Went out with a cup of water and poured it in to stop it,so the thing didn't melt. It was worth the money. Now we just went totally non-smoking on property so after the fall when all currently booked reservations are finished, I'll be taking that out too. But I'll keep it to see what happens. I'm still shocked by the number of people who smoke.

Smokers smoke.
They thought they were being considerate bringing the butts inside and not just tossing them in the yard. I think you are looking at this from the wrong perspective.
Every one of us here deals with the public as our guests and smokers at our places. You can only set up some nice guidelines, and hope they follow them. If they don't they don't. If they smoke in the room then charge them.
PS You mean we are not the only sounding board in your life? You have, ahem, another?
