I have one for each room, exactly the same type. The largest guy on the construction crew used it to climb out the window, as a test, so it does work and does support large people.
Just this am a couple who do go to lots of B&B's told me they thought the ladders were a nice safety feature. That's the first comment I've gotten about the ladders.

Where/how do you have them stored?

They are mounted in the wall below the window, so a hole is sawed into the wall. I assume it's anchored somehow to a stud. It looks just like the photo on the click through. The door that covers the ladder is wood and we painted it the same as the window sill.

They look nice, wish they would work here but our windows go down to 4" above the floor so there is no room. They should have a weight limit posted with the instructions.

There are others that can be stored under a bed or in the closet that hook over the window sill and get tossed out. They have a weight limit of up to 1000 lbs. I researched them when we were getting the fire codes changed. I went with a solution to the problem in hand rather than standing there like a Helpless Hannah asking them what we should do. Perhaps that is where I went wrong. I did not ask the big strong men (legislators or the Fire Marshal) for a solution. The costs (circa 2005) were from $40 to $100 depending on where and what model. There is also one that is not too obtrusive that can be attached to the building that was like a pole with foot pegs ladder and there was another that was a retractable ladder for on the outside of the building.
