I need a screen door that does not open 'out'. Our entry door is at the top of the stairs so the screen door needs to slide not open on hinges. Any ideas? Is anyone using an 'unhinged' screen door. (Please, I know how that sounds! Bad enough the innkeeper is unhinged!)

have you thought of those screen curtains. They hang, split in the center and seal with magnets. There are some other options on Amazon...do a search. here is one.

Home Depot has similar: http://www.homedepot.com/buy/new-york-wire-38-in-x-81-in-fiberglass-doorway-screen-curtain-319421.html.
I'm wondering about guests just blowing thru them with suitcases. But that video did show a dog jumping on it so it might work. Not sure how it attaches at the bottom, tho.
And then there are the reviews...
I think I need more of a 'door'. Even if I could build one that slides like an old barn door. It doesn't have to be perfectly fitting just 'good enough' so I can open the door for a breeze during breakfast. The rest of the day the door is closed so we know who is coming and going.

well yes, you could get some lumber, make a frame that fits over the door and put screening on it. Then you would have to get one of those barn door kits and that has to be permanently installed and I don't think you want something like that on your door.
I don't think they attach at the bottom. I think just weights to hold in place. The ones I read had pretty good reviews. They are cheap enough you could try it. If they go through with suitcases, they are cut in half and ones with magnets just close back together. Seems to me I saw them on a info mercial sometime ago. Here is the one I saw

We actually have one installed. Very imporant is the height. The top part stays closed and is tacked on. So imagine a curtain that is attached on three sides with a split in the middle. Easy enough to actually get through as long as you have the top clearance.

I wonder if you could construct a pocket screen door that slides into the wall when opened.

Do guests use this screen door? A lot of the reviews said even a light breeze will blow it open and that the magnets kept coming off the screen fabric. How about where it attaches to the building? Do you take the screen down in the winter and leave the velcro on the building?

We don't have any 'walls' per se. It is a wall of windows on both sides of the door. That's why it would need to be outside on a track if I did it that way. There is also a screen door that rolls up but I'm not sure guests could handle it. Not knowing that it is going to roll up might throw them completely!

I've seen these before. Search for "Retractable Screen Door". It's like a roll-up shade, but is vertical - acts like a pocket door, without the pocket - it rolls up to one side. I want one, but all of my doors have odd measurements, so nothing fits. :(

We attached it to the wood that was there. We have had a magnet or two fall off, since they clip on, we just clip them back. We leave it on all winter. Haven't had a problem with it, other than the falling off magnets, from time to time. Guests manage to figure it out.

Heres one at home depot: http://www.homedepot.com/buy/odl-inc/36-in-w-x-78-in-h-white-retractable-screen-for-sliding-glass-short-height-doors-6-ft-8-in-outswing-doors-16053.html
Certainly alot more expensive, but if you have an opening that it will fit, might be worth it.

Have you considered having it like a "shower curtain" or a curtain with a tie back? Use the flexible screen and either slide to the side to get in or have a cord at the middle to pull to gather the screening to the side to get in.

CL, that is the type that I would go for, but I'm wondering how bulky it is at the side and how it looks on an historic building. They always show it on new homes. Not to mention that it probably only fits a standard size exterior door opening...which of course don't exist on our house.
I guess if guests are not pulling on it, the screening would not have to take abuse.....

Your idea is great, Such type of doors are popular now a days, I think you can have a nice one and you even can order to build as you needed.

Have you no idea when you was installing a door. This type of door can only be fitted by removing and then repeat it by the same process at the right position.

These doors not only look wonderful but also provide increased airflow throughout the homes interior. Retractable screen doors provide you fresh air and maintain outside views while preventing the entrance of insects inside the homes interior.

These are very easy to operate and are available for any door type including single doors, san diego retractable screens double doors, sliding doors, double sliding doors, and large-openings. You can also have the doors open sideways which is standard or open upwards depending on your choice and comfort.

I have these only come under a different name. We had them instaled 3 years a go and love them. Our guests have like them to and wanted to know where did we get them. The only thing you have to watch out for is check the track every so often . As it some times collects dust and dirt. If that is the case just simply wipe track off. I found ours in RONA .
