The door lock thread got me thinking of this.
Some, many of you have alarm systems. Those that do, do you have a split system. Seperating the Inn and owners quarters?
More to why this thread.
Cameras and digital recorders.......any have a system?
I would certainly consider it on the outside of the building. Security and insurance reasons. Was thinking of indoors in the direction of entrance and exit points

What you also want to consider is how this looks to your guest...if you have a B&B they are in your HOME. Do you want them to think you are spying on them in your home? The next thought goes immediately to- where else did he put those cameras?
Outside security cameras will also make the guest think the neighborhood isn't safe. Essentially, try to blend in with the surroundings. If security cameras are de rigeur in your neighborhood, then have them. If you think you need them because your location is remote (and around here it is the remote homes that get broken into the most), then get them and train them on the driveway and parking area and entry areas.
I'd keep them out of the house, tho.
Having a security system on a B&B is tricky. When do you engage the system? When do you disengage it? Guests get up at 5 AM to run. They come back from weddings at 2 AM.

I have a 9mm, a 410 shotgun and a 270 rifle AND a trained attack cat.
Seriously, we have a remote driveway alert that lets us know when someone is coming down the drive and motion-activated security lights. We don't need much else here other than the aforementioned firearms.

I'm planning to put in a burglar/fire alarm system. Fire alarm will always be active, and call the fire department (through a monitoring service) if there's a fire. I'd only activate the burglar alarm on nights when there are no guests staying with us (hope there aren't too many of those nights, but at least at first I expect a lot of them).

ok.........so alarm system for owners quarters only.
Cameras inside or out....hotels that I have been to have had cameras. Inside, public areas...outside as well.....seen the camera bubble in hallways to.
Not so much a privacy issue......more a security, I think even more so insurance reasons......you know, those mysterious slip and falls

I want you to think about going to stay at a friend's summer house at the shore. Are you REALLY able to relax knowing there are cameras in the hallways, at the front door, on the deck, over the hot tub?
Most of the time those bubble things are fakes. Try getting robbed in a hotel hallway sometime...
Remember, you're not opening a hotel. Unless you are.

I understand what you're saying....I do....and I agree.
No, I would not put one over the hot tub.......no, I would not have a problem knowing there are cameras for the parking area....wide view of deck or patio.....outside stairs....or even the inside lobby area.......only way I would be uncomfortable, if I was doing something I shouldn't be doing.
If guests happen to see the cameras outside......so be it.......they are there for their safety, and insurance purposes......
Cameras in rooms?..........I don't think I want to spend any time in jail
Hotels, casinos, dept. stores, some restaurants and many, many public areas have cameras......no, they don't have cameras in bathrooms, changing rooms or guest bedrooms.

I stayed at a b&b in Newport, RI that had cameras all over. I could understand the parking area, front porch, etc., but they also had them in the hallways and up the stairs. It gave me the creeps. I hated it. It made me wonder where else the cameras were that I couldn't see.
Unless you're in a high crime area, keep the cameras out of the house.

I do think there probably can be camera overload......
Diva........i'd suspect the many cameras inside may have something to do with false insurance claims.......or some where along the way the owners experienced such a thing.
Back in the days of High School.....I had been working part time in a grocery store, unloading trucks. Taking the full pallets out to the ends of the aisles for night crew to pack out.
One incident had a 3,000 lb pallet and a nut case pushing behind. I was stearing.....We move quick......We yell to get out of the way once we break the doors and get onto the store floor......I'm yelling, waving hands.......one woman decided not to move from the meat counter.........flat out refused.......she saw us, heard us.........would not move.........pallet pinned her to the meat display cooler..........she brought a law suit.........security cameras showed that she was saw us, heard us refused to move.........security cameras showed this woman over time in the store during the hours we unload trucks and had moved as requested before.......she lost the law suit.
Same goes for shoppers purposely spilling liquids on the floor and claiming a fall.
This stuff happens all to often in public locations
As for the cameras........those that are exposed to these things, I would think airing on the side of caution is justified.......If one has never encountered things like this....understandable those would think that cameras are silly and an invasion of some degree.

We have been talking about installing a security system. We'd only have the "burglar" section in the owners' quarters, but the smoke/CO2/etc detectors in the rest of the house. We've had such monitored services in our other homes (not BnBs), and I really like the idea of the monitored smoke detectors (can't be there all the time).

another thing......as with auto insurance.....discount for an alarm system
Home, business security systems qualify for insurance discounts

Maybe outdoor security camera for parking lot, porch to check arrivals...but anywhere else inside the house...would be creepy to me as well. Not a place I would trust or want to stay in.

Chris picked up at an inn once that had a camera pointed at the front door. Made it look like the place was dangerous. Gave him the creeps. I can understand it in a city setting, though.

Whatever you do don't photograph your guests without their knowledge or LISTEN to them. That still bothers me, yes it really does.

Yes, I have heard of some putting in baby cams in the common rooms to watch and/or listen to what was going on. Gave me the creeps....

I'm planning to put in a burglar/fire alarm system. Fire alarm will always be active, and call the fire department (through a monitoring service) if there's a fire. I'd only activate the burglar alarm on nights when there are no guests staying with us (hope there aren't too many of those nights, but at least at first I expect a lot of them)..

We have hard-wired smoke/carbon monoxide alarms that will sound in ALL the cabins should one be set off. It really discourages smokers in our non-smoking rooms.

Arkie - as I recall you are working with a architect for your building renovation. He/she will need to go over the specs that are required via federal, state and local fire codes for your area. You must have at min. those requirements, then anything above, beyond that is up to you. Here we were required to have both hard-wired AND battery back up smoke alarms (not carbon as we are all electric).

We put in the carbon monoxide detectors after a bunch of kids at my old college died from CO inhalation.

Wasn't there in innkeeper in Maine who went to jail for a camera he had placed in the BATHROOM of bis B&B? I forget the details, but I thought it was just recently (within the past 3 years or so)
