We slipped from #1, where we've been for nearly 4 years, to #2 over the weekend. I'm not even upset. She actually deserves it. Gourmet, plated breakfast. Fire pit each night with her and her husband. Close to town. Rooms are really cute.
My husband would rather NOT be #1 because with that comes high expectations.

Our neighbours (now sold and burnt out) were like that - we tried to warn them start out with slightly lower expectations and then surpas them - you can't give 110% all the time there is nothing left and you have to keep it up from then on out as people expect it. Didn't listen (don't get me wrong stella reviews) and when they had to dial it down people complained ie moved to after 7pm check in its self check in as have 2 young girls and want to have settled dinner and homework supervised properly - if they had started with that no one would have expected any different.
 
We have a few guests that we socialize with in the evenings. But that is a glass of wine in the common area. No guests have been invited to our home (except those we knew before the inn.)

Guest just left, leaving a clogged toilet (on a septic system), an empty roll of paper towels that had previously been full, no evidence of them in any of the trash bins. I couldn't clear the clog and am now waiting on plumber. I texted her to inform her of the situation and asked how she would like to cover the plumber's bill.
I am anticipating my first one star.

An ordinary clog I would not worry about. The entire roll down the hatch is beyond normal wear and tear. I have to get that clog cleared before the next guests arrive.

Its August.
I'm tired.
Thanks to reading innkeepers forums long ago we had waterproof mattress covers from the get go. The only other time I have ever requested a guest to cover damage was after a woman let her dog pee on the bed. She was asked to cover the cost of a new waterproof mattress pad. She did.

Im sorry but full charge to the parents for that - its not normal wear and tear
 
Totally agree with the pressure to be super if you've got the top slot.
We no longer have to worry about that! And, someday, I'll stop harping on it, too. ;-)

We had that once. We did charge for the new mattress. Before they left. They knew it was an ongoing problem, and did nothing about the poor kid s problem.
Presented them with an estimate from our mattress company. Not in front of kid. No problem with payment.
Immediately ordered mattress protectors for every bed!

That is more than average wear. Flushing any paper towels down a toilet is not something to be done, but a full roll is intentional!

We have a septic system as well. We do have a sign about not flushing anything but toilet tissue. Some females don't get that. Evidence when we must have out system worked on. There is a reason why plumbers are costly.
 
At least here locally I'm not sure I understand the ranking system that is in use. One hotel that is "sponsored" at the top of the list and then a numbered list of around 15 properties including a few that no longer exist, but the order of the numbered list does not seem related to the number of eyes or stars assigned to the properties.
 
This is weird. We are back up to #1. We haven't gotten any new reviews, so I checked the other inn. They aren't there. Can't find them. AND, after us, they list the next in line at #3. So, for some reason, #2 inn has been erased from TA.
