Just heard from a woman in our capital city. Her husband it taking the director of medicine position at our local hospital, and they will be living every other week in our town, alternating between here and their home in the capital.
So she inquired about renting one of my soon-to-open vacation rental apartments a week at a time, every other week, for the foreseeable future.
Unfortunately, they have a greyhound (dog, not bus) and I'm not allowing pets. It was hard to pass up so much guaranteed business, but I don't see any alternative. I'm not building an expensive dog house here!
Sigh.

It hurts, but in the long run you will be happy. That is ONE BIG dog and you have no idea what kind of damage the dog would (could) have done. The only thing it had going for it is they are not yippers.

I would refer them to a nice place that you know of that takes dogs. Then, sometime when they are without the pup, the will remember your going the extra mile for them.

I gave them a couple of referrals to others who do rentals in the historic district. Don't know if they allow greyhounds though, but maybe they will know someone who does. Dogs that big are going to hard to get in to any transient rental. I think these folks are going to have problems getting a place to take them.
She said they'd looked at buying an RV to live in here every-other-week, but none of our local RV parks have Wi-Fi, and that's just as important to them as their dog. I can sure understand that!
Hmmm. Now I'm considering setting up an RV hookup behind my building, and giving selling them my Wi-Fi password!

Since we went to a no dogs policy I get calls every other day for pet friendly. We never had this before.

I'm pretty sure that's a sub-section of Murphy's Law, or something.

R U sure about the WIFI thing?
The deal with the WIFI at the parks is everyone is on it so it is sketchy. They have to use it in off hours to not get knocked off it all the time. (Speaking on behalf of snowbirds who had a phone installed to have their OWN wifi at their RV spot) fyi in case anyone needs to know this info.

The only RV hookups in town are in the city park and there is no Wi-Fi there. There are also RV hookups at the nearby state park, but also no Wi-Fi.
We're looking now at putting them at the river cabins. The cabins are closed in winter but will open in March, which is when these folks are planning to start living every other week here. If they're still coming when the cabins close next winter, we'll figure something out then!

wow ... i would be very tempted to try to work something out with these people. i realize the dog is a LARGE BREED and you said no pets ... but this would be a long term arrangement and therefore different rules from your stayafew nights guests, wouldn't it? not knowing your setup but do you have an end unit or something that would be out of the way of others? that could accommodate this arrangement?
i would ask to meet the dog if possible. see how it behaves. see how they are with the dog. would the dog be alone at the property or would someone be there with it?
i have lots of dogs in the family. i am not saying this is how all large and small breeds are, but in my family ... the little ones are the chewey, barky, nervy, accident prone dogs. the big ones ask to go out, don't chew the furniture, shoes and socks, never mess in the house and are laid back.
just a thought ... in case you are reconsidering.

The thing is, they'll be staying every-other-week, which means I'd be renting the space to others in the off weeks. If they were renting the place full time, I could just plan on an expensive deep clean after they leave, but they're not wanting to pay for it to sit empty when they aren't in town.
But yes, it's tempting to try to work something out!

Had you thought about a "special" monthly rate for them that even though you might be able to rent it in the off week, it is not guaranteed (or are you in an area where it will be EVERY week?) to be occupied. You may be able to get that lovely money as a certainty with a little "give". Then it will be just the deep clean at the end. You could also point out that they would not have to pack up - they could just leave their things there and just move themselves. A lot easier than muscling suitcases in and out twice a month.

I guarantee they would want a VERY SPECIAL monthly rate. We have requests for this same thing here (2 blocks from the hospital and most of the Specialists travel in and out) and it is NEVER worth it, we could rent a couple nights and make more. All you have to do is tell them what rate you would offer and they would decline.
They will be hard pressed to find any rental that accepts pets, period.

I rented my "orphan room" that way this summer and it worked nicely for me. I truly think it depends on the circumstances and the people. I get requests for this all the time from construction and pipeline - and I say sorry because I know they are not what I want. the 2 times I said yes were to ladies and it worked out great. But I will never do locals again!! I will not feel that sorry for them ever!

We just sanded and refinished the stoop inside the bathroom where that couple locked the dog and came into breakfast and it scratched it all up (plus the door which we had to repaint). I have had the cottage windows open for days to air it out from the varnish smell.

Yes, this one involves a dog. The one time I said OK and took one ended with total regret (little dog). I would pass it up myself (but I live here) because of the dog.

Your business, your policies, your decision to make the call!
I have had 1 dog slipped in, that I am aware of, that dog (little pocket pooch) yelped much of the night while the couple was out partying and scratched the door and ripped the carpet at the door seam. THIS is what happens when people SNEAK pets in. They are the bad pet owners.
In general though, I do not think that pet owners such as the one that called you would be. If you feel your business is as full as you want to be, then give this no further thought, otherwise I would consider* giving this couple a test run. Ask for a pet deposit over your reg. rate so you can have the room cleaned after each use. *considering this if you have a room that would be conducive for the situation & away from other guests.

haha ... lots of advice from me and others from the outside looking in. i guess the 'bottom line' $ wise is what nags at me. but of course you know best what is right for your property and your situation. and we make rules and we make exceptions to rules!!

Greyhound are big dogs, with large poop to clean and loud barks. Also they tend to be nervous (around strangers and when left alone). So would that incur unexpected tinkles, and chewing as well? For 2 adults and that dog breed, charge at least a third more, and hope you do not lose other next-door guests b/c the dog. Also, would the dog be allow inside alone when the owners were working or out? That's a big no-no for me.
