Hotel Survey Reveals Surprising Trends in Guest Behavior
January 7, 2010
Each year, the Novotel Hotel Chain polls their workers to identify trends in guest behavior. This year's survey, released today, took into account results—some of which are shocking—from 30 hotels across Australia and New Zealand. Here are the highlights:
Women behaving badly.
The survey found that women are more likely to 'souvenir' popularly pilfered items such as mini shampoo bottles and other toiletries, and also more frequently take a 'five finger discount' on unacceptable items such as bathrobes, hairdryers, cushions, and even toilet paper. Women are also more likely to trash their hotel rooms—including leaving it in shambles and flooding the bathroom.
Women becoming more assertive.
The survey found that women are becoming more assertive, and are more likely to dine alone in hotel restaurants and request massages from the opposite sex than before. Women are also ordering more porn than in previous years, now representing 12 percent of sales as compared to 8 percent a decade ago.
More couples caught in the act.
In public areas, security cameras are catching more couples in the act. A greater number of guests are being caught canoodling in public areas such as pools, spas, saunas, hallways, stairwells, bars and even storerooms. Novotel said "…this level of exhibitionism perhaps comes from the sense of freedom and anonymity that comes with being in a hotel—but also from the increased security now in place in hotels compared with ten years ago."
Men more likely to order expensive wine, give big tips, get caught naked.
As for men, they are more likely to order the most expensive wine on the list, take beer out of the mini bar (women prefer chocolate), and are more generous tippers. However, men should take a tip and cover up: they are also more likely to be caught naked outside of their rooms.
Men and women traveling lighter.
Both men and women are traveling lighter, with an average of 1 bag per male and 2.1 bags per female.
Men and women are going green.
Finally, the survey also saw a trend in increased concern for the environment. Thirty-two percent of guests are now reusing towels compared with just 11 percent ten years ago.
Hotel workers also find themselves in some silly situations: one employee was called in to remove a "hazardous reptile" from a guest's room that turned out to be a tiny gecko, while another reported being hit over the head by a sex toy that was thrown over a balcony by an "angry husband."
Housekeepers report that they often find forgotten sex toys and lingerie in rooms. Some other surprising items include fake limbs, a riding crop, a snake, a nun's habit, false teeth, and even a baby! "Thankfully the tot was quickly reunited with his forgetful parents," wrote Novotel.
Novotels also get their fair share of unusual guest requests, including one traveler who asked that 33 rubber ducks be place in the bathtub before his girlfriend checked in, and another who wanted his room filled with hay for his farm-loving girlfriend. Another guest asked that the bath be filled with red wine at the Novotel Barossa Valley in South Australia.
Figuring out what goes on behind closed doors is difficult, but housekeepers at Novotel have pieced together the clues!

Interesting how some here had the same conclusions a little while ago!
