I just got an apology email... apparently T/A got hacked and they claim that all they lost was our private email addresses. And apparently just an apology is what they think is appropriate... instead of telling us what they are doing to prevent this from happening in the future, restoring our confidence and ensuring that they are trustworthy again. Anyone else get this pathetic email?

I got it - it's not particularly reassuring, is it? But I haven't had much more than that from any of the credit card companies that have been compromised when they send me a new card.

Is it legit, or is it a phishing scam?

Well, just in case, maybe it's time to change passwords. If you aren't using software like LastPass, maybe it's time to consider getting it and using 12 character randomly generated passwords, like %m!eKDu5BPN& so that your account can't be broken into. I certainly think it's time to change mine on T/A.
I wonder... if the email isn't reassuring... is it because they can't reassure us... ie they aren't telling us everything.

This evening we got 10x the usual spam - all from russian sources in cyrillic. Then I saw the TA email. I wonder if that is it?

Nothing via email is worthy of clicking or believing. Go to your Business mgmt center IN TA and see if there is a message IN TA for you. Otherwise it is just rubbish.

A second email came this morning from Steve Kaufer, CEO. It contained at least one blatant lie:
Steve Kaufer said:
I'd also like to reassure you that TripAdvisor does not collect members' credit card or financial information, and we never sell or rent our member list.
Those of us who were hit with an automatic renewal of our business listing, either actual or attempted, even after we were taken off auto-renewal, know that they keep the credit card information because they were able to charge the cards without being given the information a second time.

This is on their site so we can assume it is real or a very ellaborate hoax.
