I can tell when guests have wandered around looking into rooms by their not so subtle footie prints all over my nicely vacuumed carpets. Those are rooms where the doors are wide open. I have them open during the day for light in the hallways and so guests can see what the rooms look like. I'd like it if they could just look from the doorway, but they don't seem to be able to do that.
Today we had a guest walk right into a room with a closed door. She just opened it and walked in. The room is all laid out for a birthday party for incoming guests, thus the closed door. When I approached the guest and asked if she needed help she merely waved her wine glass at me and said she was doing a tour of all the rooms.
I certainly hope the other guests locked their doors because a closed door did not stop her at all.
I went to close and lock the other rooms awaiting guests but I could see from the aforementioned footie prints that she'd already been on the prowl in the rest of the house.
When DH went out to get some mugs she had lost the wine glass and was just walking around with the bottle. Just ducky. No sign of her now.

Oh joy! Where oh where did that wine glass go? I hope not in a room to be occupied by others.

Perhaps try the ropes they use across doorways in museums, so you can look in but can't walk in. Of course, women with wine glasses would just limbo under the rope and go on in, but it might keep some out.
Someone made a good point the other day about how unlocked vacant rooms are fair game for thieves. They can't take stuff from their own room because you'd know who took it, but if you leave other rooms open, all the stuff in them is there for the taking. As long as they're not the only guests in the house you could never be sure who took the stuff.

Sounds like it is just time to lock all unoccupied rooms. it is a shame that one spoils it all for others.

Thieves- when I come to the place where I start looking at everyone as a potential thief I'll hang up the apron. I know the coffee mugs are going to go walking but I won't lock them up.
Locking the rooms- you know I stressed over the bathroom in the hall and how many years it took me to put an exterior lock on that door. I just can't make this house into a series of closed doors. It is too small. If I had long hallways with windows at the ends I could do that. But, this is a hallway that is long enough to house 2 doors with a light switch between them. Having those doors closed would make it look desolate.
However, the room she walked into is right next to my bedroom and I don't usually have that door closed. Today I am glad I did, altho a closed door did not keep her out of the guest room.
They leave tomorrow and I'm glad for it. That way I don't have to lock up all the other rooms after they're cleaned.
We do close all the doors at night because it can be a bit creepy to walk along with the dark rooms staring back at you.

More importantly hope SHE wasn't passed out in a room to be occupied by others!

No, I checked the empty rooms to be sure she was not there!

this is why all my doors are locked - im not having people mess up nice rooms ready for guests by trying out all the beds, helping themselves to coffee etc and then it looks like you havn't cleaned the room properly when the next guest arrives. Its more work for no money.

I have a window at the end of the hall and a matching window in the shared bath at the top of the stairs. The staircase wall is a solid 2-story wall - 2-guestrooms are on the other side of it. Since my utility (junk & storage) and the ensuite (most rented room) are on the side opposite the stairs, the hall is darkened with both doors closed. As long as there are guests in-house, the lights are on in the hallway - the switch controls the lights in the halls upstairs and down (all or none). There is a lighted switch at the top and the bottom of the staircase but after the insurance agent told me requiring a guest to actually reach out and flip the switch would judge me negligent, I have left the lights on when guests are here - they go off when we are the only ones in the house.

Forget the velvet rope over the doorways, just install (lockable) storm doors on all the bedrooms.

You know....I was in an old historic hotel in Ohio many years ago. They had those Double dutch doors on some of the rooms and so the room was open but the bottom of the door was locked. So people could actually see the rooms but not get in. I am sure if someone really wanted to they could some how unlock the door by leaning over maybe???? But at least it was an attempt to keep people out but still be able to see what rooms were like.

as a former innkeeper, i sympathize.
as a guest, i admit to being really curious. if a door was open i'd look in but not GO in ... but only because i KNOW BETTER now. prior to innkeeping, i don't think i saw the harm in walking around in an open room. but, really, i knew i shouldn't be in there.
curious to know where the wine glass turned up .. unless it was hers (or yours) and she packed it.
it is distressing to have to lock everything up ...
do you remember the woman who walked in like nobody's business and used the bathroom in the downstairs guestroom? the front door was unlocked because of busy guest traffic and she walked right in. i spotted her leaving and yelled after her and she told me it was an emergency and she HAD to do it. then i had to clean it, thanks very much. but, really ... what if i hadn't seen her slipping out the door? what if the new guests walked in to a dirty (!) toilet? ugh ... so disrespectful.
if she had come to me in the kitchen and asked nicely, i would have let her use my bathroom. i mean, i wasn't an ogre or anything (YET).

Here's a guest perspective: I noticed that when we were escorted to our room by the innkeeper at our most recent stay, that the door to our room was wide open. I didn't like this. As part of a package, we had a bottle of wine to be set up in the room and I could imagine people wandering in there and possibly checking out what kind of wine it was and putting it back down on the tray. Then, there's the whole idea of the room being totally flipped between guests and then people come wandering around in your freshly cleaned room? No. Get my room ready for me and then close it off from the other possible wanderers. Thank you.
I kept our guest rooms locked here from the beginning. I don't know...people will be people and some of them are pretty curious.

I agree. If other guests want to see the other rooms, they should look at the website. Every place has a pic of the rooms.
