If you have a slideshow, what are you using? Is it free? Does that mean you are also advertising the free site? If you pay, what's the approx cost? How easy/hard was it to integrate the slideshow?
Any suggestions for slideshow software welcome! I think I was doing this last year, too, but I really need to do something soon!

If you want a really easy to use software to create a slide show. / swf flash file...try Amara Saves you the hassle of buying and learning FLASH and it is only $30. It has its limitations for sure...but I just didn't have time and wasn't getting how to do it in FLASH...so I moved on to this. One day I will take a flash class but for now this is really simple and quick learning curve.

thanks for the info Catlady. I don't know if I will be doing it soon, but I'd like to put something on my tour site.

There are two main types of slideshows. Those controlled by javascript and those done with Flash (or something that generates Flash like Amara does). They each have their pros and cons.
Javascript
  • -requires javascript being turned on (some security conscious people turn it off) make sure the script you are using defaults to a static picture if javascript is not on <noscript>.
  • +usually easier/faster to swap out photos
  • -involves messing around with code and careful file naming of the images
  • +large variety of free scripts available
Flash based (swf file)
  • -need software to generate it and update it
  • -requires flash plugin turned on (all machines in the past 8 years come with it) code should be used so a still image appears if the plugin is unavailable <no embed>
  • +More effects are possible
  • -more time consuming to update (usually)

This subject is very timely for me as well. Thanks for the useful information - Catlady & Swirt!!!

I will say that if you keep your files done in Amara, it is VERY quick and easy to remove a slide / add a new one and resave it.
I didn't bother mentioning the javascript stuff because I know most here just don't want to mess with that stuff. Time consuming too.

How long have you been using this? Long enough for there to be problems or anything that made you have to contact them? Has this software been around for awhile?

I have used it for about a year. I only had to contact them once but it was for one of their other software programs...and they helped me just fine.
Here are a sample of things I have done with it

Those came out nice. On the first two where the Flash is really an integal part of the page, you should add a
<noembed> <img src="elopeintro.jpg" width"542" height="295" alt="some appropriate keyword phrase"></noembed>
right after the </embed> tag. elopeintro.jpg should be a static image of one of the photos used. Same size. That way if people have Flash turned off, they don't get a big hole in the layout.
The no embed is not needed as badly on the last two examples as if that item doesn't show, nobody would really notice (doesn't leave a hole).

THANKS...I will do that. I hadn't thought about that.
