i hope you CALLED! nice voice ~ 'we are sorry, we did not receive your deposit as agreed and had to let the room go to another guest. perhaps you can stay with us another time.' (end)
i never liked taking checks as a deposit. because sometimes the checks did not arrive and the guest did.
the problem for me was compounded by the sweet old hotel across the street (now providing free breakfast to guests by the way) who DID NOT TAKE CREDIT CARDS. can you imagine? so guests would try to book where they stayed before (across the street), that place would be full, and they would refer them to me. and the guests were in the 'cash or check' mode of thinking.
oh .... by the way ... i had one guest who called himself doctor because he had his doctoral in something to do with computers, not sure what .... but in this country we tend to only call those with medical doctorals 'doctor' ... and i was a little surprised..

I'm at work today and cannot make personal calls. I am not going to call right away. If I do he'll give me some other story about mailing the check and continue the charade. I'm going to first wait and see if he acknowledges the email.

doesn't matter if 'check is in the mail' ... check wasn't received.
it's amazing how checks are fading .... my bank (that shall remain nameless) just changed my savings account to a checking account because i transferred money too often. and, guess what? NO checks come with it.

I think that depends a bit on the field you're in - when I worked in the defense industry with highly educated engineers, many were called doctor so the customers would know how well educated the staff was; when I worked with recruiting from universities, doctor was a pretty common honorific. In those arenas, the title is important for status in the community. This guy may have thought calling himself Dr. would make him seem more important.

what a coincidence .... my dad had his doctoral (doctorate?) in engineering and some other science. but no one never called him Dr. actually, he just referred to himself by his last name.

My favorite boss of all time in the corporate world was a PhD in engineering. His secretary always referred to him as Dr.; he never introduced himself that way because he was a supremely modest guy. But in our world, the customers had more respect for the PhDs. They used to ask for a certain minimum percentage of them on their contracts.

This is my point. If he can't/won't give me a cc number or debit card, and calls himself "Dr. ___" I smell a problem. I smell either a no show, or someone who will trash the rooms. There is some reason for not booking normally. I have only had one guest in two years not fill out the online reservations request, and she was an older lady who didn't use computers. I mailed her the webervations form and she filled it out with cc information.
Incidentally, have not heard anything from him. He may be in the military as I think he asked if I gave a discount, which I only do if they are coming from or going to a hardship post. This close to Washington and Norfolk I'd go broke giving everone a discount.

Trust your gut, sounds like you already did. Something fishy there for sure.
We had a family of 3 call 3 months ahead to book a room for a weekend. The man would not give a credit card, so I told him he had to pay the full amount up front. He sent me a money order for about 75% of the total. He called they day they were supposed to be coming in to cancel because his son was sick. He couldn't understand why he would be responsible for the balance. So we lost out because we did not re-rent the room.
I won't do that again, if you don't want to give a valid cc you're not staying here..
I agree. No cc no room here. I am still worried this guy will show up, but he has no confirmation and has not sent in anything. I'm stressed about my TripAdvisor status but I don't think they can do anything if they have not stayed here. I had a problem before with a group who didn't confirm and then gave me a bad review on Yahoo Travel. On that one they don't have to stay here to send in a review, and the business can't respond.

Keep in mind Samster's bad TA review...that person didn't stay and they still got to write a review and Samster's mgmt response cannot state anything about the guest making it all up.

Well they emailed me the reservation request form back on 9/9 which was 11 days ago and so far no check, and no response to my email that the room has been booked. They wanted the whole wing for two couples, and one room has just booked last night so they are out of luck.
We often get people who request reservations for tours and the B&B but never send their email to say they are not coming. But so far as I know he offered to send at first check for 100%, then on 9/9 he said he would send a check for 50%. So I have no confirmation for him. If he writes me up so be it. I can respond that I'm so sorry but we never received your check and emailed you as such. And leave it at that.
It's just a shame if they do write because I JUST moved up to slot #2 and it was hard work to do so here.

I would call and talk to him in person. Email just doesn't cut it for notification of things like this....he can always say he didn't get your emails. Any reservation that puts my back up gets one or more phone calls.

I may call him later. He has not sent a check, which was required for a booking. If he had not initially contacted me by phone, I'd think this was a check scam. He requests a booking for two couples with no first names, in the amount of $2000, calls himself Dr Taylor, says he'll send a check for the full amount in enough time to clear, then says he'll send a check for 50% and goes silent when I want a cc for the balance.
Now, when I am printing out the responses, I see that the emails from gmail shows his email, but the emails sent to him from my Yahoo account says "undisclosed recipients" instead of his email.
Swirt, what does that mean? Does not sound on the up and up to me when I see it.

It is not true that you can't state anything about the guest making it all up in your management respone. In my case, I knew who the guest was and that they were lying and I stated as much in my response and TA allowed it.

He has a verizon.net email. It was when I sent my response from yahoo as well as from gmail that I saw the yahoo changed his address from [email protected] to "undisclosed recipient" once sent.
That actually gives me an out to call him and confirm that he received my email.

gmail is the most secure online mail I have found. I never get spam, unlike the rest that go by the wayside one by one for online email. Yahoo being the all time worst.

And I know he received the email not confirming because gmail will tell you if the email address was not working. But I'm wondering if this guy was a scammer since the response sent from Yahoo changed to "undisclosed recipient" When I go online to try and look it up I only see information on how to send as undisclosed, not about when I send the email and it changes to it.

Well, I'm thinking less and less of bothering to call this person. He still has not responded and I did a reverse check of his phone number. He's listed, and at a different address than he gave. I checked the other couples last name in the town and they came up not at the address he gave.
I checked a reverse check on the address he gave and he listed the apartment as 1233 North and it did not come up. The general address came up and listed about 50 names (his phone is registered so he should show up) and nothing on him or his friends.
So I went into the US Post office website and looked up the address asking for the zip code and no such puppy. They have the address SOUTH but nothing NORTH.
I may have just missed being scammed, I think. My gut reaction appears to have been correct.
Maybe I should call him just for fun and tell him that the letter I sent with alternate housing suggestions for the timeframe he wanted just came back returned mail!
