OK. We all know I am NOT a world traveler. I have been blessed to have traveled all over the US and some in Canada - by car. I am about to go to Germany. What does Trip Insurance insure? What does it cover?

Trip insurance is different in different countries. In Canada you generally buy a policy that covers you healthcare costs outside of the country, with exclusions to pre-existing conditions unless you buy a policy that covers that. In the case of Canadians, the usualy maximum on the policy is $1M to $2M and the intent of the policy is to medevac you from anywhere to Canada, because once you are here, all costs for the insurance company stops (Medicare takes over.)
You can also buy seperate coverage for cancellation, trip delay and even theft. Generally you need to buy cancellation policies within 5 days of purchasing the trip, at least here in Canada.
Try insuremytrip and access america if you are in the US. In Canada, Kanetix provides a number of quotes that usually explain the policies.
The most important to know is that if you are on medication, they won't cover you unless you have a special policy unless you have been stable for at least six months (policies differ, so you have to ask). Some don't cover theft and assume your home insurance does. Others don't cover cars and assume that your car insurance does. Just ask the questions and insure that your are covering your most expensive costs. Usually, cancellation, emergency and health. In other words, cancelling the trip, having to come home for an emergency or death and finally the cost of getting medical care outside of the country.

YOU MUST READ THE FINE PRINT. There are all different types of policies. Sometimes you must purchase the policy within a certain number of days of booking your trip. I've purchased from this company several times, but fortunately never had to use the policy.

OK. Thanks. That sounds as if it would be more for if you had booked with a tour company. Am I correct? I do not go to a doc so am not on meds of any kind and the only outlay up front is the plane fare. My cousin is my tour guide. From that description - does it sound as if I need it?

I would say save your money, unless you think there is any chance that DH could have some sort of setback. That's what the insurance would be good for in your case. If you needed to come back because of some emergency with immediate family.
Go on the website and enter in the cost of your airfare and see how much a policy would cost. It's probably pretty cheap and then you can decide if it would give you peace of mind if you bought it.

Basically you can break this down into two parts...
  1. Health insurance - If your regular policy does not include health, you need this. Getting sick on vacation can ruin you. Okay, maybe moreso for Canadians visiting the US, but still, it is never good to get medical bills and these can be catastrophic.
  2. Vacation loss - In this case, the question is... what can you afford to lose versus what it costs you. For much of my life this has been easy to answer, I can afford to lose it all and it's not a catastrophe. So for this part, I have usually self insured. But now that my parents are getting older and I may have to catch an emergency flight, pay for my hotel rooms, etc, it's become a greater risk for me. It's all a question of what you can afford to risk. If it's simply plane tickets then it might be so minimal as to not be a worry. And sometimes they offer you this insurance for a few bucks when you buy your ticket. But if you have a lot of expense that are fixed, it's insurance against that loss.

I would consider it for any international travel, particularly with your DH's health concerns. When we did our Caribbean trip that cost ~$3500, the total trip insurance was about $300. This included bad weather from the departing city, our health costs outside the country, transportation if we were injured, etc. As others have pointed out it is all in the fine print, you can get coverage for anything you want, the more coverage the higher the cost.
We used Travel Guard, their site clearly broke out the different options for you. http://www.travelguard.com/

dupe post
for some reason this happens on ocassion I edit and have not saved it and it dupes.

Cruise insurance vs flying overseas are two different things and two diff reasons to get the insurance.
If there is a commercial air strike?
THE BEST "ASSURANCE" imo would be a plane ticket that you can CHANGE. Ie not a nonrefundable nonchangeable air ticket. THAT is what I would invest in if I went overseas and had a possibility of an ill person back here at home. The main reason being, not the loss of the ticket in the first place, but having to fly back with short notice could be VERY COSTLY in airfare. 50 times what you paid for your orig flight.

We are lucky here are if we travel in the European union the countries here have all made a deal that we will treat each others sick people this covers me for all medical care but not a flight home so I get insurance for that. We are a bit loony about it because of my cousin his wife is greek and when their first child was born (in the UK) after a bit they wanted to take him to greece to meet the grandparents so they did. However they didn't know Janie has cystic fibrosis which was set off by the flight and had to be rushed to hospital in Greece. Now in greece the policy is to let them die as it costs so much to keep them alive and they don't usually make it past about 25 anyway. So my aunt and uncle had to pay about $25,000 to get him home with a special plane and doctors etc because they didn't have travel insurance "because we were just visiting the parents" never again!

Most private health policies require the insured to pay overseas medical bills in advance. Then, maybe, if it was life-threatening, you get reimbursed. So if trip insurance will cover this, all the better.

Trip Insurance is very worthwhile if you are making an expensive trip however most trip insurance is restrictive - it covers most major medical events, deaths or inability to travel for a "covered" reason - the best place to start checking is www.insuremytrip.com
Many insurances may be "secondary" to another policy, for example a travel policy may cover you for medical emergencies but only AFTER your regular insurance. On the flip side travel insurance with your credit card may NOT cover you unti after other insurances
It's like any other insurance, you don't know you need it until you need it
As someone who has traveled extensively but thank God never had any medical or other trip/travel emergencies, I often take it "in case" ... Do you homework and you can get a good price, remember if you buy it through a travel agent they are generally getting a commission so check it out yourself
