What is it with the ones who try and smoke in the shower because they think you can't smell it! Everyone with a nose can!!"!!!!!! Had a heavy smoker in for 2 nights and she smoked outside all the time no trouble. 1 night smoker not a heavy smoker and this! drives me mad!

Fortunately, so far, my smokers have been nice enough to go outside. They are conditioned to do so here I think. Poor smokers are not allowed to smoke anywhere - not even in a casino or a bar here. I am not and never have been a smoker but I really do not like the way they are being treated considering ALL the governments - state and Fed - want the tax money they bleed from the smokers and drinkers. Want to raise a tax - raise the "SIN" tax!
I think if a bar is a Smoking bar the non-smokers can easily go to a non-smoking bar rather than demand the smoking bar be forced to ban smoking. As long as it is known up front - no surprises - let them alone. As for the workers? If you are a non-smoker, apply at a non-smoking establishment.

Here they cannot smoke in public buildings, bars, leisure centres, pubs, restuarants. It is also illegal for them to smoke in accommodation establishments unless you have a dedicated smoking floor - Its just that they are completely inconsiderate! If I saw them smoking technically I could call the police on them.

Inconserderate is one word. You are polite. I also enjoy those who smoke outside next to an open window....

I totally agree that some are absolutely inconsiderate. Sorry you had one of those.

Just saw this and don't know where to put it so I will put it here. It was too cute to not share

I've worked in a hotel where the odd guest would smoke in the bathroom. It's like they think by smoking where the fan is will take away the smoke smell. But it doesn't. The hotel has a sign at the front desk telling guests they will be charged a 'cleaning fee' if they smoke in their room.

Same as you, I've never smoked but banning it totally in bars seems a step too far. Surely it should be the owners choice if a bar is smoking or non-smoking and then the public can decide for themselves if they wish to drink in there or not. Nanny state again, or is it that people are incapable of accepting responsibility for their own choices.

Reminds me of a sign I saw at a family restaurant once:
"Crying children are like good intentions.
They should be carried out!"

Actually, the reason for banning smoking in bars has NOTHING to do with the customers at all and nothing to do with the owners, but instead with the fact that the employees have a right to work in a smoke-free workplace and there was no way to ensure that for them without it becoming a hostile workplace. On the books, our government gave bar owners over 5 years to install better ventilation system or separate ventilation systems and in that time, none did it. It was clear that they weren't interested in the welfare of their clients or their employees. So they banned it. (Incidentally, our government also gave insurance companies over 10 years to adjust their actuarial tables to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation. Only one insurance company actually adjusted their policies and their actuarial tables. Clearly they weren't going to do it, so the government repealed the temporary exemption they had granted them. The world didn't end... they finally did the adjustment.)
The only place where people can smoke now is a cigar bar.
Even though I don't go out to bars, it's nice to not have to smell them when the guests come back from them. The clothing that reeked of bars is a thing of the past around here.

Like Eric, it was done here more for the employees than anything else. Sure you could say that only smokers should then go and work at a bar or restaurant, but that eliminates a lot of job opportunities. I actually opted to share an office with a guy who smoked rather than a woman who talked. The guy went outside to smoke (because he was courteous, not because he was required to) but the woman never shut up.
Banning smoking in the work place was an excellent idea. It is not countrywide here and you can still go into places where they have 'separate' non-smoking sections way in the back and you have to walk thru the smoking section to get there. The distinction? Merely a designated table for non-smokers, the smoke can't read the tent card tho.
Before smoking was banned from the workplace your clothing that you bought brand new smelled from cig smoke from people smoking in the stores! It was ubiquitous so you couldn't find a place to work where you could be smoke free.

As far as I'm concerned, people can smoke wherever they like, just as long as they don't exhale. ;)

My wife is a smoker. It is a total pain in the backside but she is unwilling to quit so she has to do all kinds of extra walking to find a place she can smoke. All smokers in the US are pretty used to this. Pretty hard to claim you didn't know you couldn't smoke in the room. You can't smoke indoors anywhere.

A bit of a shocker to me when I looked up the regs here, but you CAN smoke in hotel rooms here. I'd been telling everyone you can't until I went to find the exact wording. This is one of 5 exemptions to the reg:
5) Smoking is not prohibited in motel or hotel rooms that are rented to members of the public.

Probably, Maddie, unless there is a caveat by the owner of the property for designated non-smoking rooms. There's probably no regulation that states that the hospitality property owner can not designate all rooms as non-smoking - large properties do it.

It is in our Fire Code that no smoking is permitted indoors at any B & B of 6 rooms or less. When we were trying to get Code changed in the Legislature we allowed that to be inserted because most of us were non-smoking anyway. County Health Depts are one by one banning smoking indoors in ANY building used by the Public.

Just bringing up the point that some people may assume it's ok to smoke at a B&B because they were allowed to do so in a hotel somewhere else in the state.
We clearly state 'non smoking' and I will tell guests where to smoke if I see them smoking or smell smoke on them when they arrive. I'm very sensitive now to cig smoke. (After living 18 years with parents who smoked and another several years with a husband who smoked. And, hanging out in bars for eons where everyone smoked!)
On our last trip to VA our whole party basically ordered, ate and left the restaurant we were in after about 20 minutes because I was shallow breathing to avoid inhaling too deeply all the cig smoke around us. After that we looked for restaurants that specifically stated on the front door 'no smoking'. However, not much is open on a Sunday in VA, so choices were limited.
