I had to get this one off my chest. Just had a guy call asking about room avail in july. I told him I had one room avail but for only 2 days . His exact words ( Did I say I wanted 2 nights I said three nights. ) After running my inn for 9 years I almost lost it with him , but the good innkeeper in me said to let it go . After 3 more calls from him asking about the room and what I would be serving for breakfast ( 3 months from Now) I think that one room is now gone to another guest . Sorry to rant but just had to get this off my chest for the day and move on. Later Innkeepers

You're right...the room is no longer available for any number of days.
We get guests who ask what is for breakfast months down the road and I tell them, 'It's at the whim of the cook so we never know.'

Bless you today. You did the right thing!
Could it be the same dude that called me the other day to convince him 7 months in advance why he should stay with us? We don't have time for this rubbish. Oh or the dude that told me all about his commercial kitchen and how he really is into cooking breakfast for his family on the weekends, so what I serve better measure up.
Listen, people, out there everywhere - do you call a hotel and say these things? (Probably)
Have a good day anyway Nkeeprs

FOrget about him. Next time he calls just say, sorry the no rooms available. Gheez what a PITA...can you imagine what he would be like in person???

Oh and don't forget that he probably asked for a AAA discount after you already told him of all the specials and discounts you are running. DOH!
DUFUS!
"What other discounts do you offer?" I still remember that caller.

OK, that would have earned a, 'I'm sorry, that is too much pressure for me, here's the number of a place that caters to food porn addicts.'

Since we are ranting:
I had a couple last week who knocked on my door for salad dressing and then again an hr. later for a real glass plate (didn't like the paper plates left in the room).......these are all things we ask the front desk clerk at a hotel for.....right? Never
And now we have to buy a new guest microwave cause this same couple over cooked their microwave popcorn by double or triple the directions on the package, and we actually had to take the microwave right outside in order to get out most of the smell. And of course they did not offer to pay for a new one which I am going out this morning to purchase.

I know I know...we had a couple show up at noon for their wine tour of their three day stay, DH calls me all sixes and sevens at work. They called my cell last night to leave a message - my cell is dead. Did they call either number on their confirmation? The inn number or the toll free number? No... that would make sense.
The last communication from them was "maybe...we'll do a wine tour....on Wednesday." And they are not happy that we could not read their minds. All this and a 10 percent discount for active military...on three night's stay.
I always confirm via email. DH said they were checking their smart phone for my wine tour confirmation which of course they did not have, as the last communication was him asking what wineries were in the area, and me telling him the list.
When I don't have any other emails, I am going to be very polite and sympathetic, but the day is long gone when they are going to make me feel guilty or that I made a mistake. I think he was supposed to and forgot, to tell you the truth. I recall being a little miffed that he said he would "think about it and let me know" as if I can arrange a wine tour with no advanced notice.

Speaking of rude guests, here's my story for the day:
Got a call at 9:00 AM just while I was getting breakfast on the table for some late risers. Said "Hi, I'm so and so and will be checking in tonight." I said, "Yes, for your anniversery, and we'll be upgrading your room today. What time can we expect you, and he said noon. I replied that our earliest check-in is available at 3. "Well, we're coming at noon." I said, "You did sign a policy page when you made your reservation and it does state that check-in is strictly at 3 or later." Then he said "I'm really calling to book 2 massages for my wife and I tonight and what is the latest possible time we can get our massages?" Me: "Well, I sent you an email when you booked suggesting our Romance Package or a couples massage, but I did say we need 48 hours notice. However, I will check with our therapist, see if she can come tonight, and I'll call you back." Him: "That's 35 an hour, right?" "No, our romance package is 35, massage is 55 an hour plus tip, all paid directly to our therapist..." and while I'm still talking and explaining things, he blurts out "We're just going to forget all about it then!" and hangs up on me mid-sentence. Was not real sure if he was canceling everything or just the massage request.
Hubby just got home from the dentist and after repeating the exchange, he says "Cancel the reservation. He showed you who he is and what he's like and that's only the beginning." I thought about it, feeling sorry for his wife for a minute, then called back and got his wife on the phone. He was not available. "I'm sorry for any inconvenience, but your husband called earlier today, was very rude and demanding, then hung up on me while I was still speaking. As a response to that kind of disrespect, I am canceling your reservation. There will be no charge to your card. I have a number here for another bed and breakfast in the area with an opening, if you'd like it." She says, no thanks and I say good-bye. She had no questions, did not appear surprised, my guess is he is even more abrupt and rude at home. The B & B # I was going to give him is for an innkeeper in our area who is infamous for being rude to guests. Has actually blown up at them several times! I felt they deserve each other and might possibly even put each other in their place before the night was out!
I feel free, and am glad I took hubby's advice.

P.A. give your hubby a hug for me on that one. Good call. Support when most needed - he is a good guy.

Since I am involved in so many things here in town, I cannot NOT answer my door.
Sunday DH had a bad night which means I did not get much sleep. Our horse people who were due in about 11 PM (for which I was grateful because last night was a City Council night) did not get in, get the 11 horses settled, and in here until 3 AM. And since they wanted a 7:30 AM breakfast, I did not bother going to bed. By the time I got them gone, DH squared away for the morning, back from the pharmacy with his meds, etc it was 1 PM and i crawled into my jammies (after 36 hours in the same clothes you skin starts crawling). This lady comes up on the porch and knocks. Turns out she wants availability & rate info - it wasn't on my web site (which we know is bull). I told her the rates and she says, "they would be here Friday, Saturday, and Sunday is this per night?" I told her yes, that hotels will charge their rate per night - "oh, I was not asking that..." (right!) Personally I think she was here to check up out and see the rooms but she failed. I was in jammies, I had stripped the 2 rooms for last night and had one load in the dryer (bad line drying day) and the second one in the washer, and just the bottom sheets on the beds (trying to let the wrinkles relax out since I have made the changeover to summer sheets). I told her I was sorry I could not show her our rooms but they were not made up yet. Such is life in a small town.
Oh, I did get a couple hours sleep out of the 4 I was trying to nap - phone calls trying to get the Garden Club's taxes done kept getting me up!
The good part was the guests were transporters and were very satisfied with the service and facilities here. He said he will be telling others about us. They found us in a horse guidebook that is printed every year (no online version) that costs me $30 per year. That was an excellent ROI even if I do not get another rez from it all year. The stable was happy with their take also.
