JB - - And this is why, no matter what anyone says, if you must have a self check in, a personal note with the guests name and something clever and welcoming is the way to go! A personal touch. and yes there is a difference betwn the leisure and business traveler. :)

Oddly, there was just another 'report' somewhere saying that hotel guests would rather have better service than free perks.
If we all had a million dollars to invest in the 'next big thing' we could all completely digitize our inns so breakfast popped out of a little cubby by the bed every morning, dishes were sucked back into the same slot and washed or incinerated and we never actually had to see the guest at all.
Some of the questions she raised are certainly what hotels are looking at...if guests are willing to check themselves in that means fewer arguments at the front desk, fewer perks to hand out, fewer employees needed. Which we know will then lead to the clerks who remain giving you the hairy eyeball if you show up wanting a 'traditional' check-in. Eye rolling, sighing, you know the drill.
It will be interesting to see how it works when the hotels overbook and send the same email with the same access codes to different guests. Hmmm...
And, really, do you WANT the hotel being able to track you? Next thing on the list is to send you a reminder, with a coupon, to go spend some money in the bar...the possibilities are endless.

My problem is when there is a problem ie this week my nextdoor neighbours fire alarm went off 6.30am on a saturday woke me up. They are unmanned so all the guests milling about in the lobby wondering what to do. On two occasions here lately we have had power cuts. One for no reason I know of and the second cos the geniouses doing work accross the street cut through the cable! Guests all come out of rooms "what is going on etc" its not when things are running fine that is the problem its when you hit something like this or over booking or a plumbing problem etc.
