On the 1st Jan I emailed TA to say I didn't want to renew my business listing. I subsequently had a call from my "account executive" saying he wanted to send me information about the performance of my listing which he did.
On the 8th Feb I emailed my "account executive" once again confirming I wanted to cancel.
On 13th feb they took £654.10 out of my bank and I received an automatic renewal email.
On 14th Feb I raised this as a "Business Listing User Question" through their online system and I received an email saying someone would get back to me, no one has.
On 17th Feb I phoned and spoke to a lady called Katherine, she said she would get someone to look into it, I've heard nothing.
Today I phoned my bank and told them, they're taking the money back and putting a stop on TA taking any more money from my account.

Ya gotta do what ya gotta do.
They probably have more people who forget or give up so it's worth their while to drag their feet.
BTW, anyone else in this boat? Be preemptive. Call your cc now and say you will not accept charges from ta as you've declined to continue their service.

i can't stand auto renewal ... it's everywhere with everything and you have to jump through hoops to make it stop! if i want it, great .. but they make it so dang hard to get out of.

The worst I have experienced was bedandbreakfast.com
There is no way to switch to manual renewal on your own.

yes, and one tactic is to have you call a 'support number' where you languish on hold listening to the worst muzak ever!

Method 2. You call your CC company, ask them for a new CC number, since you think yours may be compromised. New number, new expiration, they call you!

We need a section on this forum titled WARNINGS in RED and then we can post these things there. This happened to me 4 years ago and I told everyone about it, you can trust them as far as you can throw them!
I will add your pain was double mine, that was under the intro price, not the higher one they charge now.

I've done that before and the cc company won't do anything until the company actually charges the card. Then you can dispute. They will not block it. I tried that with another company less than 6 months ago.

I have not tried this as I think the TA business listing helps me, but can't you log in to the management area and delete your credit card information or perhaps modify it so something that doesn't work if there is not a simple delete option?

Does it help to have spoken with someone in advance?

You mean speak with someone at the bank in advance? NO. That's what I did. I knew this company had a bad habit of auto renewing and there was no opt-out on their site. I called the credit card company and told them I did not want this specific company to be able to charge my card. They told me they can't stop it. It would charge and I would have to dispute it.
Like HJ, I had written the offending compay an e-mail and left several voice messages and had no reply back so I wanted to do a pre-emptive strike on them.

When I signed up for my 1 year test on TA, I gave them a credit card that would expire before my renewal. That way they wouldn't be able to auto-renew without my giving them an updated card. It worked.

I love this. Love it. It's a headache to notify others of the change, but worth it in cases where you really don't want something to autorenew.

That is what I did with bb.com

What about getting one of those refillable CC's. Give them that card and you can add the $ if you want to renew.

as you probably know, I'm normally discreet about company/people names when I come to this forum to complain. However in this instance I feel so aggrieved about the way they auto renew, I was not, in fact the posting title was deliberately worded for Goo gle and my posting was strictly the facts because I think people should be warned about this.

I ended up telling my bank - after filling out the paperwork to STOP a cc processor taking a monthly dip into my account after I cancelled them - that if they did not give me back my money AND stop the dipping, I would close the account. It took filling out the forms twice to get it done. The next cc processor surprised me and did not give me a hassle - but in view of the previous experience, I had already changed banks when I quit.
The only thing I have on auto renew is my domains and hosting.

By a strange coincidence I've received a letter today about my car insurance auto-renewing.

I used to grumble ever four months when some retailer had their database hacked and I had to get a new credit card. Now I love it.
Agree. Get your card changed at least every nine months. It's great for the "Auto-renewers" but it's a great backstop for you: When you get the "We were unable to charge your account" emails, it's a red-flag for you to do some ROI analysis to decide if you SHOULD renew.
