The boss who made the reservation called early evening to tell me his men would not arrive until between 11 & 11:30 if that was OK. That will be fine sez I. 12, 12:30, 1:00 - about 1:15 I see a car stop at the stop sign at the alley, having pulled up REAL slow. I figured it was my guests so I go out on the porch. Yep, tis them - they were looking for a hotel. Take them to the room and ask what time do they want breakfast - (Himself hit it on the head) 7 AM.
Knowing sleep will be fitful, I plan biscuits & gravy. 5:30 the alarm goes off. I make the best biscuits I ever made (they are so flaky), sausage gravy is good, beautiful fruit bowl (watermelon balls, kiwi berries, and huge blueberries), Surprise muffins, Colombian coffee, OJ, and cranberry-pomegranate juice. 7:10 I start making noise (even did a turn on the doorbell - one turn, and let the storm door slam). 7:30 they come down. Me- breakfast is ready. Them - we are running late, no time to eat. So one takes a coffee to-go and the other has a glass of juice, I bag up the muffins and give them to one of them, and they are gone. I COULD HAVE SLEPT-IN!!!!!!! Thank you. Rant over. I feel much better.
Update: The guys came back about 8:30 tonight. They were falling all over themselves with apologies - the boss booked the too far from the job. They were falling asleep going to work this morning. They brought the credit card to charge for the room but it refused to swipe - I had to key it anyway. Charged for 2 nights and let it go. I would have been a stinker to hold them to the room and have them risk an accident. I feel the 2-nights was fair since by now, I could not have re-rented that room. Sigh. Oh well, I got enough to pay my quarterly taxes even with the manual entry bite. So tomorrow, I sleep in to 7. YEA.

Feeling your pain. Hope you and himself like biscuits and gravy. Maybe invite the neighbors for brunch.

Thank you for un-numbing my brain. Called Reuben to ask if he likes biscuits & gravy. He said yes, so took a casserole dish of gravy with the biscuits sitting on top, covered with plastic wrap so he can nuke it over to City Hall. Himself will eat the fruit.

'tis a shame. Nice to share and give away. Nice to have a lovely b&b breakfast for yourself, too! To soften your pain ... Guests don't often realize you've been up cooking and preparing just for them. They don't know if no other guests will be eating the lovely breakfast. They don't know the trouble you've gone to just for them ... don't know that you won't be cracking eggs into a pan or putting out boxes of cereal when they sit down.
Remembering dinners made for family that all rushed away ... no time for that ... dinners packed into tupperware and stashed in the fridge ... never the same reheated. Sitting alone at the dinner table, cracking open a bottle of wine, toasting the dog and the cat ... Brunches, too, made for a sleepy full house ... but no no ... one has to be at practice will be home late, another is heading out with friends sorry ma, another just wants to sleep in and then rushes out the door late for something ... and me, cranking up the jazz because that's what I like. Sharing my most amazing morning glory muffins with a neighbor who crumbled them up and fed them to the birds!
Repeat .. repeat ... repeat ...

That is the beauty of this place - everyone understands my rant, knows it will blow over into the "that is how it is" category because all are in the BTDT place.

I bring leftovers to my office every once in awhile. The office mates love it!
Sometimes I share with family down the street. Everyone loves "free" food.

I'd jump on those biscuits, but just finished two egg puffs at:
An Innmate's place.
Yes, the getaway is finally underway!

Next time FedEx them to me in Vermont. Haven't had good biscuits & gravy since I left Tennessee.

So sorry to hear that....I'm with PSwann, send them my way!

How do you make sausage gravy? Is this an indulgence I don't need to crave?

don't start me on ranting! am ABSOLUTELY LIVID!!!! had a couple coming today for a whole load of cardboard boxes for moving - when they came to the door apparently guests told them I had gone out for the day and wasn't in!!!!!! so they went away!!!!
Furious doesn't cover it! I mean seriously! who do they think is checking in the guests? plus If I am out DH is in and if we are both out the chamber maid is in -
Would you interfear with the running of someone elses business anywhere else? should I go to walmart and do the same! You would think people if they have made an appointment at a specific time for someone to come and get something that the person would actually be there!

Just so everyone knows, I was not P O'ed about them not eating breakfast - it was the sleep I lost that, as the Duchess used to say, got on my very last nerve. Breakfast is a take it or leave it - but do not tell me at 1:15 AM that you want breakfast at 7 AM and then YOU sleep through it.
SS - sorry for the diversion. You brown a pound of good pork sausage (I add chopped onion also). Then add 1/4 cup of flour and gradually add 2 1/2 cups milk. Stir continually until thickened. Salt & pepper to taste. Serve with your favorite biscuits or if plating put 2 halves of biscuit on the plate and spoon sausage gravy over the biscuits (generous with gravy). This is the way I do it. There is also a red-eye gravy and I do not know that one.

Wow. What business is it of the guests? That's beyond the pale.

And it was wonderful to finally meet in person. Now it's our turn to head your direction next.

Wow is right!

I'll join in and add mine. Four people come from air. They seemed to have a great time. We had great conversations with them and everything went well. They left a review which was good but only rated us as two/three stars including location! .... Then air let us know that we are now only 73% of their Great Host Award! Oct 10th is the cut off day. grrr!

Yes! Send it to me next time!!!

Many of you know that I was not a cook prior to starting my innkeeping adventure. So, when it came to gravy, I wanted to replicate that which I remembered from my years in Tennessee. I turned to a 30 year old copy of the Joy of Cooking, and learned that some people make beer gravy. So, my sausage gravy starts out with a roux followed by about a half can of beer (no need to guess where the other half goes) then half and half, then browned sausage. I have to admit that it tastes really good. The alcohol gets cooked off, I assume.
