Call for a room. Quote price. Ok. Person is on the way so I ask for info to have the reg form ready on arrival. A little hesitation on giving name. Complete refusal to give address or any other info. Really?
Quick search on phone number gives info about person. Why so hesitant? Maybe not going to show up at all!

THEY called YOU and they are still too suspicious to give you their info? More of this "don't give your info over the phone" mentality. They don't think it through. Just apply the rule to all phones in all situations. Life is harder for such people.

you don't give me a card you don't have a room - first card gets it - have been let down toooo many times by no shows to trust we are 10 mins away

I have had this a little, I ascribe it to someone driving and talking on phone when they are not supposed to do so. I tell 'em to show up and I'll run the card. If I don't book them it doesn't count as a no show.
BTW, DW thinks I am a slacker not insisting on card and full 9 yards.

I could go for that if the person said, 'Gee, I'm driving, I can't get to my credit card.' What the person said was, 'What do you need that for?' when asked for address. (In that incredulous tone of voice designed to make you think no one has ever asked for their details before.)
Nope, sorry. When told it was required by law for any guest checking in, and that I personally wanted to know who was staying here, the person said never mind.

Noncommittal. He wanted you to hold the room in case he needed it yet he knew he was still calling around.
Sorta like the reservation I got yesterday the address was just street name, no city, state or zipcode. And the CC sec. code was 8 digits.
Sent them an email asking for this data in order to finalize the reservation. Received a reply tonight - sorry, we have to cancel. .

Did that come directly? Can you set your rez system to require those fields? And to check the cc field is completely filled in before accepting the rez? Yikes!

It was a direct booking through ResKey.
I can make the address required, and I state full address, including city, state, zip but the system does not check to make sure it is complete.
The Sec code is required. It does not state # of digits etc. This must have been some random # she put in not knowing it should have been 3 for the Visa.

That's a bug. The cc field should have a check on it to be sure it is populated correctly. Note, it could be a totally fictitious number because I'm not sure all the rez systems validate the number but you should get all 15 or 16 digits.

Oh, I got the full CC number, it was the Sec Code (CVV) that was 8 digits instead of 3.
ResKey does not validate the number as being good, but I do think it makes sure there are 15 or 16 digits in the CC field.
I know now it does not have a limit on the Sec Code field.

Then that's a bug! It should do a check - 3 digits for V/MC/D and 4 digits for AmEx. At least that way if they were fiddling they would have given up and fiddled someone else instead of making you do all the work of getting in touch with them.
I can run the card without the CVV. It's a few more keystrokes and more money but it works.

Point taken. Call last night from the road and I dutifully got all the info. Man on phone, driving, woman rummaging in purse for cc; she reads it, he repeats it; some discussion about what their address is (generally not a good sign), I ask for the zip code where the cc bills are sent; that they have.
When they arrive at 8:00 I am actually mildly surprised. Turns out they have just finished military service and are on the road, reporting to no one but each other.

I've been having the same problem with RK. On some reservations I'm getting the last 7 digits of their phone number instead of the Sec Code. I posted about this on the RK forum and John guessed that these folks were using auto-fill. It's happened to me 4 times this month. Wish he would add a digit checker, because it's a PITA.
Maybe you can express your thoughts on the forum too. I just posted in the past few days.

We've had that discussion over the phone about "what's your address?" Always a fun time...
The best one was a couple who see each other every couple of years. They were older and very sweet.
Nice that your couple were rediscovering each other.

I haven't had any experience of this sort yet, and I hope it doesn't in the future. But thanks for sharing this, so that I can be careful about such cases.

UPDATE RK SEC CODE: With Copper's input along with mine, John has changed the code so that it can be maximum 4 numbers. Although Poppa, who was programmer manager in another life, wonders why it was allowed to be auto-filled with a phone number in the first place; that it may have some sort of tag attached to it. We shall see... at least John was responsive in solving the issue.

Thanks Mamma for being so persistent. I still need to go in and change the wording of what John added, but for the life of me I don't know where to find it. Any ideas? .
