We're spending a couple of nights at a B&B about 3 hours from home. Huge old 1886 house. They even have doilies on their doilies here. Doilies on each shelf of each nightstand, on the dresser, on the desk. There's a box of Kleenex with a doily on top of it, a slit cut in the doily for pulling the tissue through. But I guess it fits the era of the house.
It's a really nice place. My only complaint is that I'm in a room in the center of the house with NO WINDOWS. Not even in the bathroom. Behind the bed there's a curtain that gives the feel of there being a window, but behind it is just a wall. The fire escape map on the wall confirms that I'm surrounded by other rooms of the house. No outside wall. So, I'll take the risk for a couple of nights that, if this place has been here since 1886, it's probably not going to burn this weekend. Fingers crossed. But I've carefully studied the path to the nearest exit. Building codes in this town must be even more lax than in most of Arkansas!
Right beside us is a park where locals come every night to play bluegrass and country music. Little groups of musicians all over the place, each surrounded by a little audience in lawn chairs. Really nice rural atmosphere. Perfect weather. No admission, no passing the hat. Just music for the joy of it.
Looking forward to their breakfast tomorrow and Sunday. A good getaway, and a good tax-deductible research trip.
