    B&B

Several past and present members of this forum have had good experiences with 'temps' - or interim innkeepers/innsitters, as we prefer to call ourselves. I used to be an owner who used professional innsitters and now I am an innsitter myself. The website InterimInnkeepers.net has over 40...

    Going away

Not to take things off topic, but if any of you are still under the impression that Mort gets all the PITA guests, I was lucky enough to visit her again a few weeks ago, and her B&B was half-full of the types of guests who make me miss innkeeping. One repeat couple, always celebrating an...

    My First Real Crooks...I think

Just a suggestion, and of course, you don't want to create all sorts of rules for one bad apple. Every unhosted place I've ever stayed requires payment in full before the day of arrival - at least a week, and often a month. Maybe now is the time to make that change?

I'm too sexy for my shirt

I used to travel all the time when I was in the corporate world - mostly recruiting trips. One of our trips, my male colleague walked out of his room instead of into the bathroom, and the door closed behind him. He slept naked. Had to go to the front desk to get a key, and of course couldn't...

I'm too sexy for my shirt

Our first weekend (with a house full of re-enactors who were being wed in the nearby Civil War battlefield), one of the young men came down to breakfast in his boxers, and only his boxers. Plus a mess of tattoos. Worst weekend of innkeeping ever.

Low Carb... No Eggs... Oh Boy

I have done baked ricotta as a low-carb, gluten-free, low-sugar dessert - with lemon or fruit. There are savory versions as well.

    Hooray for the Tax Department

Kathleen, can you email me a link to that announcement? We currently have a task force in town working on Airbnb-type regulation (currently not allowed, and that has been enforced up to the WV Supreme Court).

New website needs embedded PMS/booking engine

For what it's worth, several of my client inns have switched to ThinkReservations (including the inn I owned, from ResKey). I use it when I work for them and find it pretty easy - it also has a dynamic pricing feature that a few of them are using.

    Interim Innkeeper/Innsitter suggestions

I used to have my own B&B (6 rooms) and now I innsit. It is a part-time pursuit, and I haven't done all of the things that I will suggest to you, so pick what suits you. Before you do any of this, decide on what services you will offer, what size/style B&Bs you will target, what rates you will...

Favorite fnger food recipes or presentation?

Most quiches can be served room temperature - I wouldn't worry about keeping them hot, hot. Those pre-made phyllo cups can be filled with a lot of things. French toast sticks, maybe in squares on skewers with some fruit in between. Mini-muffins - orange-cranberry are seasonal. Mozzarella...

    HI This Week... Chargebacks!

Hotel Hell was calling around to places about five years ago, trying to source participants. They called me. They actually ended up doing an episode near here, in Harpers Ferry.

We are in apple country, so I always had hot apple soup. Baked apples are also good. Pears are local and fall-ish - baked bears with brown sugar glaze. Apple cranberry compote. I love a theme, too. I am cooking for a local B&B on Sunday and Monday, so I am looking for some Halloween...

    Microweddings

Now there's a word for it: microweddings. Fewer than 15 people. It sounds like the perfect way to package your small wedding options (if you offer them).

Also, in a brand new house, if you have high ceilings and use old beams. I have living creepy-crawling proof of that! And sorry, I didn't mean to suggest you need to remodel - just that the mission-style of decor might work well as you dress up your rooms. Those nice warm colors and clean lines...

PS: your historic building is lovely, and would lend itself to a mission-style of decorating - which is beautiful and spare. Lots of nice warm tones - copper and gold - and clean lines. I aspire to that although I still have too much stuff to really pull it off in my home.

Throws - nice for extra warmth, whether in bed or to cover your legs when reading in a nice comfy chair (which I also want in a guest room). My husband sometimes uses ours (a twin bed quilt) as an extra cover when he's freezing and I'm having a hot flash so have the room temp at subarctic. If I...

Most experts will tell you now to eliminate the frou-frou and have clean lines and bright linens. Homey is fine, but not much on the frilly stuff. Four pillows to sleep on, one for decoration, maybe a throw across the bottom of the bed (a real one, not one of those silly bed scarves). For some...

Wondering about Innmates who've moved on...

Where in PA? I am up there frequently with family in central and eastern PA.
