Things we learn the hard way about running a B&B

Money is not at all my driving factor in charging for policy breakers, I use it as a preemtive course of action. If the guest understands that I am not say NO, but say yes with the caviat that there will be a surcharge, it may make them drive around and find a book store a lunch place to spend...

Things we learn the hard way about running a B&B

I suppose Vermont known for it's Green Mountains, cheddar cheese and pure maple syrup is not as sexy as Africa, Germany or France....I see your point :)

Things we learn the hard way about running a B&B

Then here we go again, it's a state thing or insurance thing. We used to offer ATV's, snowmobiles and bikes to our guests, since we are on some of the best trail systems in the Northeast, but the insurance carriers would not offer the liability insurance to cover injuries. Oh, I'm sure if we...

Things we learn the hard way about running a B&B

Yes, states have a habit of doing that. This is a Chef owned B&B - so wine is a big influence on the decor of the B&B even the rooms are named after grapes : New Hampshire is a great outdor state, perfect for hiking and biking. We used ro offer guest free use of a bunch of mountain bikes we have...

Things we learn the hard way about running a B&B

Don't get me wrong, we can and do offer wine service to all of our rooms in our packages or if a guest orders a bottle - my post was about me supplying them glasses and openers for wine they bring in themself. New Hampshire is a liquor controlled state - all alcohol has to be purchased from...

Things we learn the hard way about running a B&B

It is a State thing. Clearly noted in your License. It is also noted in my liquour insurance policy - "No Alcoholic beverages may be consumed unles purchased on premise" I suppose being in wine country that would not go over very well :)

Things we learn the hard way about running a B&B

No I do not charge them, it is meant as a preemtive move to reduce it. It has worked in my experience. My problem is we have 9 rooms, with a 11am check out, it is very difficult to have all three floors and all rooms cleaned any earlier than 3pm

Things we learn the hard way about running a B&B

I intentionally posted in this forum as a way of expressing to newer inkeepers some of my experiences in developing a good B&B. If it came of as "this is the way" to run a B&B then I apologize, but in re-reading my original it was "MY" input of "my" experience and why "I implemented" such...

Things we learn the hard way about running a B&B

I use Innquest Software called RooMaster - But, once a guest has check out all relevent data is purged. My point on the fee for early and late check out was to deter this from happening, not really from trying gouge the guest. It is not easy to have rooms and bathrooms and of course all the...

Things we learn the hard way about running a B&B

Now you bring up a good point - I am in New Hampshire and the B&B regulations require you have 4 or more rentable rooms to run a B&B - I am sure the state does not follow the laws very closely, as I know of 2 or 3 that only rent 2 rooms. Regardless of this I have nine rooms, a restaurant and a...

Things we learn the hard way about running a B&B

You know, I stopped doing this forum stuff because of the mob mentality of some of them. I was clear in my post that I wanted to start a list with everyone's input. I never said that my policies are good for everyone. please be open minded or you (not use personally) will chase many of us new...

Things we learn the hard way about running a B&B

It make no difference as you know to which glass they use. Under our liquor license and the state B&B laws a guest cannot bring alcohol onto the premise. NOW...before you go and jump all over me, WE DO NOT stop guests from bringing in teir own liquor, I just do not want to see it. NOW, if I...

I agree, but if they do not fight it of course you can collect. I have had only two this past five years and luckily have never been questioned by the guest of cc company.

Things we learn the hard way about running a B&B

We have all learned the hard way about running a B&B, and I suppose like any business owner, if we feel we know it all then we are just fooling ourselves. I for one learn every day at least one thing new, and then decide if I should incorporate this into my business. I'd like to start a list of...

    New Webervations

if you don't mind the little bugs here and there, I work around them, then from my understanding all you need to do is call them and ask for the switch.

    New Webervations

I don't use their management or billing system, we have a seperate system we use internally, but like you, I am obsessed with the stats page. It actually help me decide when to open certain weekends for one nighters as well as other things. That VB error kills me too, it's been way too long...

    New Webervations

I certainly agree with you on the timing. I have had many calls to them them and they are very good at helping out. I have found many issues, but not enough, as you said, to ever go back. Have you checked out the reporting feature? It is nice to see what guest are doing and what dates etc., they...

    New Webervations

Packages are all inclusive item ie: 2 nights stay, dinner for two in our restaurant, flowers, etc.. Old webervations let me set a price, let's say $500 - all the guest needs to do from my website is pick the package they want, and webervations would book it automatically. Addons - When a guest...

    New Webervations

I noticed this thread has gone quiet, so I hope nobody minds if I bring it back to life for a little bit. I have been using the new Webervations for about three months now, other than a few annoying bugs, it is by far (IMHO) a terrific program. I like the look and feel of the GUi, it certainly...
